Before Love, Memory

They come for me in a station wagon. My mother already has me dressed in a navy-blue plaid jumper and a white blouse. She has yanked my dark hair into pigtails and now makes the sign of the cross on my forehead before turning me over to a skinny lady, who ushers me into the backseat of the station wagon. I join a small group of children, mostly Cuban, all of us dressed alike, our eyes bright and nervous.
 
The station wagon lady drops us off at the steps of a gloomy castle in Union City, New Jersey: Holy Family Catholic School. The yard is hemmed in with black iron bars and the front doors are made of steel. Women in dress pants roam the cement grounds like fat hens with their wings clipped, their beaks pointing and gesturing. I huddle with the other children in packs of three and five like scared chicks.
 
Miss Reynolds is the kindergarten teacher. She has glasses that make her eyes look like oversized buttons on her face, and she speaks the funny language that comes out of the television set at home when we are not watching telenovelas or the noticias, which is to say that she talks like the cartoon character Mighty
Mouse. It is English, a language that sounds like marbles in the mouth. It is fun to hear, but mostly because the mouse on the TV screen is flying.
 
Sitting in the classroom, I wait for Miss Reynolds to start talking like my mother. In Spanish. Surely it won’t be long now. An hour passes. Two hours. An entire day it feels, and still it is all Mighty Mouse.
 
I am familiar with the language. I even speak a few words of it. But I have never heard so much of it all at once. It’s like being forced to watch the same cartoon all day long.
 
I don’t know if this is what actually happened on my first day of kindergarten, but it is what I remember of my first two years in school. A few memories can be confirmed by research and on-site inspection: Mighty Mouse on television, the school’s black iron bars. My mother verifies the station wagon lady and the ethnicity of the other children, and school photographs offer details of the
uniform and my teacher’s face.
 
There are, however, missteps in memory, places where emotion has distorted people, sights, even cuerpos. In a school photograph, for example, my teacher is a skinny, androgynous white woman with thick glasses. But I remember her as a fat hen, a flying mouse, and kindergarten as the beginning of the end.


A teacher comes for us one day. Just two of us. Me and my friend, a thin, pixie-faced girl.
 
I don’t know why we are being taken from class, but in the darkened hallway as we find ourselves farther from our classroom, my friend starts crying, and hers are not baby tears. They are full blast, llorona wails. She roots herself to the ground and refuses to take one more step. The teacher begins dragging her by the arm, but the harder the woman pulls, the more my friend yells and twists, and for an instant, it looks as if her left arm is threatening to rip from her body, as if she will choose self-mutilation over what is to come at the hands of white women. As for myself, I don’t fight. I follow.
 
In an empty classroom, the white woman pulls out a deck of cards with pictures and words. She spreads the cards on a broad table, one by one. The sun is pouring through the window and coating us in a yellow liquid, but I can decipher the cards. Each one holds a picture and a word: dog, cat, house. I am to repeat each word after the teacher.
 
In Spanish, we have cartas. Tía Rosa’s husband uses them to talk with the spirit world. The cards tell us about jobs that are about to arrive, ancestors who are unhappy, a case pending with immigration. The cards are paper doors only special people can open.
 
I look at the white woman’s cards and listen to her bold English words—dog, cat, house—and there is all the evidence of what is to come in my life. I am not to go the way of the two people I long for in the thick terror of the night. The first man I love and the first woman I adore, my father and my mother with their Spanish words, are not in these cards. The road before me is English and the next part too awful to ask aloud or even silently: What is so wrong with my parents that I am not to mimic their hands, their needs, not even their words?
  
Before language, there is love. Before love, memory.


What I know of the world before kindergarten is the uneven sidewalks of Union City, New Jersey. The shop with its fat chickens hollering at us and nipping at the wire cages. The sharp smell of chicken blood when the little beasts are killed in back and brought in white plastic bags to my mother. The fabric store with its bins carrying spools of thread like a Cubana holding up the ends of her apron. The buses that snake up and down Bergenline Avenue. The store jammed with cigars and wrinkled men and women
folding the ends of the thick brown leaves.
 
Our national language is Spanish and there are many kinds. Mostly it is the firecracker Spanish of my Cuban father and his friends. It smacks the air and the back of my head and the inside of my ears. There is also the Spanish of the Puertorriqueño Tía Rosa has married. His words mimic popcorn when it first begins popping. Finally, there is Colombian Spanish. My mother’s language does not crack or bounce. It stays close to the earth, to thick hands and the smooth sides of stones.
 
English has a place here. It is the language of minorities, and you hear it every now and then, mostly from Mighty Mouse on television or the older kids on the block. English is a game of marbles. The words shoot after each other. They bump and plod and leave tracks on the ground, and it is a decent game, English that is, but everything real happens in Spanish: the way women complain about the fábricas where they work, how they yell at you to not play in the street, how they drag you into the house when the sky turns a velvet black, lying to you: “Ahorita sales otra vez.”
 
Terrible things happen in Spanish.
 
My father and his friend get drunk, slur their words, and turn into screeching birds. Rage is an awful habit in any language, I suppose, but on our street, in our home, in Spanish, it takes on awful proportions, and the mothers complain to each other in shorthand: “Qué se va ‘cer?” The reply is always the same: Así son los hombres.
Women are different.
 
Union City is filled with virgins. La Caridad, La Altagracia, La Virgen de Chiquinquirá. They come from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia. Like us, they are a matter of multiplicity.
There is never one of anything in this world. There are many virgins, many women, many sounds in Spanish.
 
Dollars, though, are a constant. In the kitchen, my mother folds aluminum foil over dollar bills and packs them into envelopes. The dollars are to be mailed with letters to her mother in Colombia.
We send dollars because of the wars. It is the eighties and there are two wars. The one in Colombia is about land and poor people. The other one, the Cold War, means my mother and I cannot travel to Cuba. “It isn’t safe,” my father says in between puffs of his thick cigar.
 
We travel instead to Hialeah, Florida, and Mami and I go together by plane to Bogotá and Boyacá, and by train to Queens and Manhattan. By the time I start kindergarten, I feel these places and New Jersey are part of the same country. Everyone lives within its borders, speaks Spanish, and eats a lot of fried pork.
 
In the evening, my mother turns on the television for the noticias. The stories arrive from Latin America. Women with missing teeth cry into microphones. Men with brown faces scream. Los niños carry younger children. Sometimes, it is only the image of men’s feet in their shoes and the white sheets covering the rest of their bodies. The women wail behind the reporter, who talks about the number of dead and those left behind.
 
“Ay, los pobres,” my mother whispers, before turning her eyes and her pregnant belly away from the television screen.
 
But I don’t look away. I want to see what it is all about, because my mother comes from that place in the television set and so does my father. Those places where the floor is a thick brown soil and men’s bodies disappear save for their shoes.

I highly recommend this book to any reader who loves memoir and ...

This is an incredibly insightful and interesting memoir by a young Latina writer. Hernandez, the child of a Columbian mother and Cuban father, both of whom work in factories in New Jersey, describes her upbringing and coming-of-age. Her understanding of her family deepens and changes as she grows into adulthood. A lot of difficult memories and topics (religion, sexuality, alcoholism to name a few) are discussed head-on, and with emotional honesty. A Cup of Water Under My Bed opened a window into a world of experiences very different from my own, which made for fascinating reading.

What I found most interesting was how well Hernandez describes the emotions of growing up and growing apart from her family, even as they influenced her profoundly and helped shape her worldview. Hernandez's narrative is not entirely linear, so those who expect that in a memoir may find it a little confusing. But I found the more spiral style interesting and just a different way to tell a story. The chapter about her mother's storytelling was a bit hard for me to follow, as the vignettes were short and kind of disconnected from each other. Still, this gave her mother a distinctly different voice from Hernandez herself, and made for an interesting contrast.

I highly recommend this book to any reader who loves memoir and is looking for an interesting story and unique voice.

A Latina look at life in NY.

A difficult book for me to rate. Many times the writing was wonderful. I understood the whole focus of the book except the author's need to discuss her sexuality. To other readers this may have been pertinent but to me I felt it subtracted from the story. The was much richness in this book but not all of the book entertained or enlightened. It is an interesting insight into this lati na woman' s life and thoughts.

Beautiful prose and a look at intersectionality

I love books that take an intersectional approach to identity. Not only does this memoir do just that, it also has some of the most beautiful prose I've read in a long time. This is by far my favorite book I've read this year. I've read it a few times and have bought it as a gift for several of my friends.

Ethical Concern & More From Eminent Physicist

Physicist Freeman Dyson has been prominent in his field since the forties, when he participated in the development of nuclear weapons. In "The Scientist As Rebel," he presents a collection of his book reviews, essays, and lectures - mostly from the last decade. The typical review covers more than one book by authors with differing views - the books serving as templates for Dyson to develop his own themes. The books themselves are of varying ages, one being from the 1600's. Many of the scientists and their biographers - probably over 150 among them both - will be readily recognized by readers of science history.

Dyson takes his time with these reviews. Sometimes it is not quickly evident where he is going, but the payoff usually justifies the suspense. In the process, we get to hear his take on innumerable hot issues in science and its interface with humanity:

*The urgent need to find a unifying theory of physics - formulas that would be compatible with both quantum mechanics and Einstein's gravitational formulas of space-time - is over-rated. We will probably never make these formulas mathematically compatible.

*Technological progress does more harm than good unless accompanied by ethical progress. The free market by itself will not produce technologies access-friendly to the poor.

*We don't have to worry about the nanotech bee-like swarms presented by Crichton in "Prey." The laws of physics don't allow entities that small to fly faster than 1/10 inch/second.

*The willingness of the British abolitionists to buy out the slave owners made the crucial difference between the peaceful liberation of the West Indian slaves in 1833 and the bloody liberation of the American slaves thirty years later.

*In Newton's time, Cambridge University and Trinity College professors had to be Anglican priests. Newton didn't even believe in the Trinity, but King Charles II gave him special dispensation. Newton complied by keeping his religious writings (and some of his scientific writings) in a private metal box - a "don't ask, don't tell" situation.

*After each published review, Dyson always had letters. The nonexpert readers were overwhelmingly complimentary. The expert readers usually had corrections for his "mistakes." This book reflects adjustments to the original reviews based on this correspondence and sometimes a PS based on more current data.

*Richard Feynman spoke from scanty notes and hated to write, claiming he was barely literate. His books were transcribed and edited from his taped words. A friend locked him in his room and wouldn't let him out until he wrote the paper about his diagrams - the paper that got him a Nobel Prize. His daughter was astounded to find extensive literate, inspirational and compassionate correspondence by Feynman 16 years after his death - some of it to strangers wanting simple information about science.

*Littlewood's law of miracles: Each person experiences about 30,000 events per day. A miracle - an event with special significance - has a probability of one chance in a million. This works out to about one miracle per person per month.

*Dyson describes himself as a skeptical Christian as was his mother, who told him, "You can throw religion out the door, but it will always come back through the window."

This is a Great book! I was continuously entertained both by the selection of books reviewed and by Dyson's excellent commentary. Skip the second section if you don't care about military issues - the better science reviews are in the last half of the book.

Surprising in so many ways

I have always been fascinated by the beauty, elegance and poetry in the writings of Freeman Dyson. In this collection of essays I found again multiple visions of Dyson's metaphors, poetry that adds soft flesh to the raw framework of science. Learned many unsuspected facts and relationships. One particularly new aspect to me was Dyson's immense talent to dig the hidden meaning off the usually unlit face of the moon when approaching a subject like German generals, Edward Teller, the normal/paranormal, among others. But I was stricken by his complete acceptance of the Christian tradition, considering his wit. Apparently Dyson never cared to read the historians who analysed whether Jesus ever existed, he never worried why the savior would wait tens of thousands of years before coming to save humanity, never apparently explored that morality does not depend upon religion, never wondered if belief in Zeus is inherently inferior to the Christian faith. Another interesting aspect is how Dyson uses his great imagination to suggest far-reaching, almost science fiction scenarios, for example, when analysing the future of biology, or the uses of multiverse theory to accomodate beliefs. I wouldn't have expected that from reading his Templeton prize lecture that I recall as a sensible statement: progress in religion meant acceptance. Anyway this is a minor point, it is a great collection, of essays, don't miss it.

Delightful!

This is a delightful collection of short stories; well, it is really a collection of book reviews written by the author in recent years for *New York Review*. But each of them was edited and brought up to 2006. Some of the revisions were in response to reader correspondence.

In any case, I was sorry when I reached the end, and I am hoping for more.

The author Freeman Dyson (author of "Disturbing the Universe") has a unique talent for bringing the characters and the protagonists to life, and many of the stories are inspired by the author's own experiences, and some are biographies of scientists (Feynman, Oppenheimer, Teller, and more) and others of people Dyson met in his career or in his life. Dyson ponders and answers the question: "Why do some scientists like Einstein gain cult status, while others like Poincare are forgotten by the public?"

This lovely little book is a gem, and it is proof that it is possible for the same person to be a brilliant scientist and a great story teller at the same time; observing the world we share, and helping us reflect on big questions of war and peace, on the environment, on space flights, and on whether there might be intelligent life out there.

The book is divided into five chapters, the last one consisting of Biographical Notes. Each of the four real chapters consists of a handful of stories (sections, essays or reviews) which can stand alone. A sample of titles of the sections: Can Science be Ethical? (the gap between rich and poor, and more.) Bombs and Potatoes. (reflections, and recollections from WWII work on the nuclear bomb.) Russians. (starting with History and ending with recollections of persons Dyson met in Russia.) The Force of Reason. (a rebel from the Manhattan Project, WWII work on the nuclear bomb.) Seeing the Unseen. (the beginning of atomic physics.) The World, the Flesh, and the Devil. (I will not spoil the plot on this one!) Religion from the Outside. (I will let you find out for yourself!)

PS.: Freeman Dyson devoted a good part of his life to science: I recently opened a whole volume of "Communications in Mathematical Physics", entirely devoted to the research and the advances pioneered by Dyson. Review by Palle Jorgensen, November 2006.

(CRC Press/ Spon Press, 2009) and Ghali, Favre, and Elbadry, Concrete Structures: Stresses and Deformations: Analysis and Design for Serviceability, 4th ed. (CRC Press/ Spon Press, 2011). Dr. Ghali has published more than 250 papers on analysis and design of concrete structures. He has also consulted on major projects that include three offshore platforms in the North Sea; major bridges in Canada, France, and Bahrain; and the Northumberland Strait Bridge connecting Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

A back to basics approach to acting in film

I first saw the actual physical course on the BBC. As such you should also get yourself a DVD set, if available. The book stands well on its own though. It really focuses on practical professional techniques in terms of acting, and how to relate to the people around you, including the director, on set. It also contains practical advice on how to memorize your lines and prepare for a performance in general. All in all, a good back to basics approach to acting in film and a thorough enjoyment to read, considering various anecdotes that add to the reading experience.

THIS GUY KNOWS WHERE IT'S AT!

I've been studying acting for several years and some of the jargon can get pretty 'high brow' trying to explain themselves. Michael Caine does not do that. He approaches the career of film acting from in the trenches with little diamonds of insight studded throughout. I especially like his advice to a film director when the director asked him to fall into a hole telling him that it was not dangerous. "You do it first," was Michael's reply. Fantastic. Shortly after reading Mr. Caine's book, I did a scene where I had to fall into freezing water after being shot. The director assured me that it was safe and the water held no obstacles. I gave him Michael's reply and after hemming and hawing a few minutes he sent a PA in to assure me that the water was deep enough and had no obstacles. Thank you Michael Caine! If your passion is film acting, you will get a kick out of this read. Salute!

A great book, straight to the point! It is a book about movie acting and it will teach you exactly that - how movie acting is different from acting in the theater. Michael Cane uses a lot of vivid examples to prove his point and to give a number of priceless tips on how to improve your acting. His passion for acting is contagious and inspiring!

Hott and Steamy!!!!

I received an ARC version of this book in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely love this series so far. The author Nicole Stewart does an amazing job of portraying each character in each book.

The relationship between Alexis, Jordan, and Andrew is unbelievable. The love that they share is definitely one of a kind. Even though Jordan betrayed both his lovers they ended up forgiving him after he admitted he was in the wrong and resigned from his job. The goes to show that true love can overcome everything.

When they all decided to come out to their parents about their relationship it broke my heart the way Alexis's family reacted. Family is supposed to accept who you are and be happy that you are happy not durian you because they don't agree with his you choose to live your life. It made me happy with how supportive Andrew's mother was about his relationship. That's how a mother should be with her child.

At the end when Alexis found out that she's pregnant made me happy for all three of them. I'm definitely excited to see how this story will end. The three of them are a family and will make amazing parents with how strong willed they all are and how much love they have to give to a child.

Revealing

Alexis, Jordan and Andrew

God this is too funny. I laughed thorough it.
A little back story
Alexis and Jordan were in a relationship. He cheated on her with Andrew.
Alexis broke of with Jordan and decided to find out what the attraction with Andrew was so she starts going out with Andrew. Andrew convinces her to go back to Jordan and Jordan convinces her to bring Andrew with her.
Now they are together and Jordan gets a job offer. However once he starts working, the relationship with the three feels off. After creatively trying to make sure Jordan doesn’t feel left out Alexis decided to bring him dinner to the office one night. Well let’s just say that things go from bad to worse and back again.
Thorough all the upsets and down the three make a decision to let the world or should I say parents know what is going on in their lives. Andrew’s mother is Ok, Jordan’s parents are reflective and Alexis’s parents are downright hostile.
Follow along and see what happens and how they find their way thru storm and what happens when the dust settles.

steamy, hot menage

I was given an arc for an honest review
This picked up where we left off with book one. Alexis, Jordan and Andrew decide it's best to move in together to take their relationship to the next level. When Jordan takes on a shirt term office job, things start to get a bit rocky. Alexis suspects something is off with Jordan. The do their best to make him feel special and not left out of the relationship. Things go downhill when she and Andrew decide to take dinner to the office to surprise him and find him in the arms of another woman. Things settle down one everything is explained and start to get back to their normal.
The trio decide to start telling the people in their lives about the type of relationship they have. All of the parents react differently. Alexis is shattered by her parents reaction to her news. Andrew's mom is awesome and wants to meet both of her sons' lovers. They help Alexis through her heartache and start to plan more for the future. I can't wait to read more about what happens with their families and the pregnancy (I'm suspecting well see more from them).
