Best CC guide out there by far!

This book is great. Has all 50 state's CC laws, prohibited areas, and the transport laws are great! What makes it so much better than the other guide is that this actually tells you where you can carry and where you can't in each state. It's easy to use, and I love the 6x9 format as it is much easier to take with me when I travel.

Excellent Guide to Peacebuilding

Conflict Assessment & Peacebuilding Planning was required reading for our Foundations in Peacebuilding course at Eastern Mennonite University's Center for Justice and Peace. I have found it to be the most useful and practical handbook I have read on peacebuilding, and I plan to carry it with me everywhere I work. I only wish that it had been available earlier. I have about ten years experience working on peacebuilding projects, and this book would have been a very valuable resource. I could have analyzed situations better and responded more appropriately. This book covers work from grassroots projects to higher-level international programs, and I think it would appeal to a variety of practitioners. Importantly, it discusses theories of change and emphasizes the need for a thorough self-assessment. I relied on this manual extensively in developing a plan for faith-based missions development work for my seminary capstone project. If I could only have one resource on peacebuilding, this would be the one.

She received a university teaching award at FSU in 2000 and has been a fellow of the American Society of Criminology since 1982.

I have found this text to be a thorough exposition of topics within the stated subject matter. There was an obvious bias in the writing which came through at times, but for the most part a very scholarly work. The glossary was the only thing I found lacking in my use of this text.

I would highly recommend this to any professor looking for a text.

About the Author
D. Peter Snustad is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his B.S. degree at the University of Minnesota and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Davis. He began his faculty career in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at Minnesota in 1965, became a charter member of the new Department of Genetics in 1966, and moved to the Department of Plant Biology in 2000. During his 43 years at Minnesota, he taught courses ranging from general biology to biochemical genetics. His initial research focused on the interactions between bacteriophage T4 and its host, E. coli. In the 1980s , his research switched to the cytoskeleton of Arabidopis and the glutamine synthetase genes of corn. His honors include the Morse-Amoco and Dangley Memorial teaching awards and election to Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A lifelong love of the Canadian wilderness has kept him in nearby Minnesota.

Michael J. Simmons is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development at the university of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his B.A. degree in biology from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in genetics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Simmons has taught a variety of courses, including genetics and population genetics. He has also mentored many students on research projects in his laboratory. Early in his career he received the Morse- Amoco teaching award from the University of Minnesota in recognition of his contributions to undergraduate education. Dr. Simmon's research focuses on the genetic significance of transposable elements in the genome of Drosophilia melanogaster. He has served on advisory committees at the National Institutes of Health and was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Genetics for 21 years. One of his favorite activities, figure skating, is especially compatible with the Minnesota climate.

An Outstanding TextBook In Genetics

This is one of the best textbooks that I have seen. First it seems exceptionally complete and does not shy away from being challenging at times. The explanations are clear and precise. It is well illustrated. It's coverage of genetics from basic concepts to advanced concepts is ideal for serious classes in Biology majors who expect to go further. The book also introduces the student to a resource that immensely useful in research: The National Center for Biotechnology Information database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). The book has inspired me to research the subject further.

You're probably not buying this book for pleasure, it's most likely because you need it for a class. The reason why I'm even bothering to write this is because I was in the same spot, but my professor wanted the latest(8th) edition. I saved money, bought this one, and it worked just fine. No problems with figures missing or huge changes in information. Save money, buy this edition if you don't need WileyPlus.

Not For Musicians!

I had wanted a book maybe titled "Genetics for Dummies", but having found none, I settled for this one. Genetics - granted - is a
VERY difficult subject, and I was hoping this might come just a little close to my hopes. No dice. This a a large, heavy TEXTBOOK on the subject, and it's taking me more than a WEEK (not reading everyday) to just get past the 2 or 3 page introduction..

Very complex subject (of course), and I would presume perfect for those who have a *little* background in basic biology. [Musician don't get biology courses in their degree programs.]

Small font, compact chapters and sub-chapters. I intend to stay with it a little longer, with hope that it will begin to 'clarify' soon. A fairly large book: 11" x 9" x 1-1/2" thick. Well illustrated.

Twice it was UFOs - Unidentified Flying Objects! This book is a series of short stories, supported by more than 90 photographs. The first part has my own stories; later stories were contributed by my fellow pilots. The last story is from WW II of our P-38 fighters attacking the Romanian oil fields and getting badly mauled by defending Romanian fighters - and a Romanian pilot's view of the battle! "Only the spirit of attack borne in a brave heart will bring success to any fighter aircraft, to matter how highly developed the aircraft may be." That quote from Adolf Galland, an Ace of the German Luftwaffe in WW II, was the motto of our 317th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Alaska. The fighter pilot is a hunter, and his quarry is the most dangerous in the world - men who want to kill him! The best defense is a good offense - ATTACK! The US Air Force had a program called "Every Man a Tiger". A tiger does not kill impulsively or in anger, but plans his attack carefully and strikes with cool ferocity. We were tigers! Fighter pilots tell stories around the bar, but they seldom write them down. These stories were written by the fighter pilots themselves! Come with me and hear of the beauty of flight, the mortal danger of electrical power failure at night in a snowstorm, and the thrill of attack with 20mm cannons firing right under your feet!

What an intriguing and rare book!

The author shares short stories spanning his experience as a child living in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack through a full and distinguish career as a "combat" fighter pilot. It is rare for a fighter pilot to put stories down in the written word. Pilots seem to prefer verbal communications, using model aircraft mounted on the ends of wooden dowel rods demonstrating energy maneuverability warfare, counter-maneuvers, escape, and most importantly... Attack!

Gordon takes the reader on a personal and very real journey, seamlessly inviting the reader to experience the feelings and emotions of the actions in every story. From a mission over Korean waters nearly triggering World War III, and just now in part being declassified, to a unilateral "pay raise" he committed fellow pilots to for the barrack cleaning services of Vietnamese woman in their employ. You won't be able to put this book down.

There is no hubris like Tom Cruise in the Top Gun movie. This is the real deal, calm, professional, cool, collected and deadly. Perhaps at one time a level of hubris existed, but not in his book. Nor will you find yourself with the preverbal "The older I get, the better I was." taste in your mouth.

I suspect over time chronological age caught up with the author's age as defined by his real life, bleeding edge experiences. Anyone with a desire to learn what it was like to fly real combat missions, patrol at the top of the world in defense of this great nation, or appreciate the endless hours of training, sacrifice and commitment required to do this for 20 plus years will enjoy this book.

I have but two complaints, the first being the title. "The Spirit of Attack: Fighter Pilot Stories" may be accurate, but it is incomplete.

I would suggest for future printings; "The Spirit of Attack: Combat Fighter Pilot Stories".

Just one more word, but it's a big one. A Fighter Pilot is a human being; a Combat Fighter Pilot is a human "Doing". Gordon is a "doer" and has earned this distinction with more than 100 combat missions facing the pointy end of Soviet made Surface to Air Missiles (SAM).

In closing I felt I was left hanging. My disappointment rooted in having reached the end of the author's stories. I found myself hungry for more. I believe you will feel the same. I soothed my disappointment by reading this book a second time, a rare thing for me to do.

Well Done, Gordon I await a sequel.

A real story of flying!

If you want to know what it was like to be in a fighter squadron this book is one you need to read. I know because I was there when some of the incidents he describes happened. He was also kind enough to include some of my stories because they added to his. He tells it like it was! His flying career was a true adventure as was true for all of us.I'm sure if he could do it all over again he would as would I. A Real Gem!

Fantastic Book. I loved it.

I was an MA-1 Tech on the F106 at Selfridge from 1961 to 1964.
I was engrossed in Gordon's experience with the F106 and others. He makes the reader feel like he is flying with the author.
I rate the book 6 stars out of a possible 5.

About the Author
Wes Higaki is the chair and co-founder of the Common Criteria Vendors' Forum (CCVF). The CCVF is an informal group of individuals that work for commercial product companies. They gather to discuss issues and to serve as the "voice of industry" to the Common Criteria development process. As the former director of the Software Assurance, Wes coordinated the efforts of Symantec Corporation to ensure the secure development of software products. This included managing the company's internal secure software development and test training, threat modeling and penetration testing. He also oversaw the vulnerability management function that ensured that vulnerabilities discovered in Symantec products were quickly and efficiently corrected. He served as a spokesman addressing software assurance issues and has been an invited speaker at several conferences. Finally, he was responsible for product certifications to provide customers additional assurance through independent third-party evaluations. He oversaw all of Symantec's Common Criteria, FIPS-140 certifications and ICSA testing. He had led a working group through the National Cyber Security Partnership to develop plans to improve the Common Criteria by working with industry and Government. He co-led the Product Certifications working group in the International Technology Association of America (now TechAmerica). He represented Symantec on the SAFECode technical committee and the Computer Security Industry Alliance (CSIA - now part of TechAmerica). Wes has over 30 years of technical and managerial experience in the software industry. He was with Symantec since the December 2000 acquisition of Axent Technologies where he was an engineering director. Prior to Axent, Wes worked for over 20 years in R&D at Hewlett-Packard Company including 7 years at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Wes received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of California, Davis and a Master of Science degree in computer science from the University of Santa Clara.

An Essential Guide to Common Criteria Evaluation

If you're going through your first Common Criteria Evaluation, you NEED this book.

The Common Criteria is a difficult process that is easy to get wrong and nearly impossible to do everything right your first time around. I recently joined a company where the entire management has been going through its first Common Criteria evaluation and they were making a few of the mistakes that this book warned about (such as: don't evaluate the product that is currently shipping because it will be obsolete by the time the evaluation is completed). Having studied the book fairly well, I was quick to speak up in these instances. At first my comments didn't weigh much, but after they got similar advice from some consultants, I now see that the management has looked to me more and more for advice on how to proceed. So, because of this book, I am now actually influencing the direction that the company is going with respect to our evaluation, and I feel quite confident that we are on the path to success.

I give this book only 4 out of 5 stars for two shortcomings: (1) the index is AWFUL, so it is nearly impossible to quickly look up something you remember having read, and (2) because the Common Criteria is going through major changes right now, not all of the advice still applies. For example, the author warns readers to avoid Protection Profiles if at all possible. That might have been possible in the past, but in the future it will not be. So this book alone is not enough: you really need to keep up with the changes that are happening to make the right decisions for your company.

Excellent quick read on a tough topic, the Common Criteria

This is the first book that I've ever found that explains the Common Criteria. The author brings a wealth of real experience managing CC evaluations, and is candid with his opinions of where it should go in the future. Recommended for vendors who are looking into CC and as a reference for those involved in the evaluations in any role.

Required reading for anyone in the CC community

I've recently received the printed version of Wes Higaki's new book "Successful Common Criteria Evaluations: A Practical Guide for Vendors." Wes was kind enough to ask me to review the draft, and I knew then that he had a winner. I must say that I'm quite impressed with the final version.

Wes brings an excellent, informed, and downright successful perspective to the vendor's side of Common Criteria evaluations and running an internal program. I've worked with Wes for many years, both as a colleague when I ran the certifications program for Cisco and as a customer as Apex assisted Symantec through many Common Criteria evaluations and other strategic efforts. Not many folks realize just how well Wes ran the program at Symantec. Of all the customers (from Fortune 50 household name company to a 2-person startup) I've worked with, no one had a better grasp on how to internally manage schedules, resources, budgets, customer requests, and yes, vendors. I'm glad to see that he's put some of that expertise out for the world (but, believe me, there's more!).

The book is well organized, taking the reader from understanding Common Criteria and the process to preparing for an evaluation (developing a business case, allocating resources, and managing the scope of the evaluation) to running the project to finalization. His review of evaluation process and evidence deliverables is presented at a comfortable, casual level for product managers planning these efforts. Wes concludes the book with some success stories* and lessons learned from all facets of a Common Criteria evaluation effort.

Overall the book is filled with excellent information and valuable, experienced insights. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in Common Criteria.

Predictably, the eccentric town characters file away Rebecca's hard city edges until her quest for Secret Santa's identity renews her Christmas cheer. Polson and Miller's breezy prose reads like the script of a mildly entertaining, sentimental made-for-TV movie (after all, he's written movies for the small screen and she's produced them) with the classic yuletide message that "giving is its own reward."

For cynics, it's a bit too sweet, but for those who get caught up in the Christmas spirit, this tiny gift book will make the perfect treat. Indianapolis Star features reporter Rebecca Campbell isn't pleased to be sent to nearby Hamden to cover the town's annual Secret Santa story (think Bill Murray in Groundhog Day), where an anonymous resident grants one deserving person's wish every year. Rather than just crank out another corny feature, Rebecca turns the story into an investigative piece in an effort to uncover the generous benefactor. You know the rest: it turns out these small-town folk are actually decent people who find nothing wrong with holiday sentimentality, and despite Rebecca's initial skepticism and ultimate success at tracking down Secret Santa, she finds it unthinkable to expose the unlikely source. Short But Sweet

Rebecca Chandler is somewhat of a scrooge, and this Christmas, she's even worse. The Indianapolis Sentinel reporter has just been dumped by her boyfriend, and now her editor has given her the assignment to travel to Hamden, and cover the story of a Secret Santa, who, much like Santa Claus, mysteriously appears every Christmas Eve to donate a gift to someone less fortunate. But Rebecca has some plans of her own. Instead of writing a tear-jerker of a story, which is what her editor wants, she plans on writing an investigative story, and unmasking the good samaritan. Of course, Rebecca didn't realize that Hamden, Indiana was actually the Christmas capital of the world, complete with an Annual Christmas Pageant; and that the quirky characters whom she meets there will actually be teaching her a great many things, including love, sacrifice, and the true meaning of Christmas.
Miller and Polson have created a fantastic novel, filled with fun, yet quirky, characters, who will teach even the grumpiest scrooge how to love this season. In the footsteps of Dickens' Ebeneezer Scrooge, and Grisham's Luther and Nora Krank, fans will relish in Rebecca's likeness to all three characters, and enjoy her own sarcastic humor at the same time. A must-have book this holiday season.

Great, light read. A small gem.

Delightful little book. It is one of those cheerful, uplifting stories that I have made a new tradition since finding it in the library, and now have it on my Kindle. I first found it while looking for Richard Paul Evans and Richard Siddoway books, so there are some similar characteristics, although I would say Evans is more complex. This is lighter than the Christmas Box series, more along the line of the Christmas Wish. Fairly predictable plot for the most part, with a twist at the end. Even if you do feel you have the plot down before the end, the details are likely mm still a surprise.
Hallmark made a movie, if that helps you decide.
