"CoffeeScript Application Development Cookbook" uses over 90 recipes to explain and illustrate development of CoffeeScript-based web applications. The book provides an introduction to CoffeeScript and its syntax, explains who one might choose CoffeeScript rather than direct JavaScript, and then several of the book's chapters and recipes cover the broader range of JavaScript-based libraries and frameworks that can be used with CoffeeScript. These recipes discuss and demonstrate integrating these JavaScript libraries and frameworks with CoffeeScript. I also like that "CoffeeScript Application Development Cookbook" has chapters with recipes on debugging and unit testing CoffeeScript code.

The text in "CoffeeScript Application Development Cookbook" is generally easy to read and flows well. There are a few typos, but most of them are easy to see what was intended and don't detract from understanding the content being presented. The book's screen snapshots illustrate the concepts well. The code listings tend to be short and focused on the recipe at hand. They are black text on white background with no color syntax and no line numbers in the electronic version of the book I reviewed.

I enjoyed reading the PDF version of "CoffeeScript Application Development Cookbook" that Packt Publishing provided for my review. It seems especially well-suited for the web developer who has some (even minor) experience in JavaScript and wants to understand why CoffeeScript may be preferable to JavaScript for his or her situation and how one can go about using CoffeeScript to develop applications that take advantage of the numerous libraries, tools, and frameworks that are available to JavaScript developers.

Great starting point for those interested in more than CoffeeScript's syntax

The CoffeeScript Application Development Cookbook is a broad survey of the current JavaScript development landscape, and is a great starting point for an experienced developer without much exposure to JavaScript or CoffeeScript, or for less experienced developers. The focus on tasks and working with frameworks and tools in a real-world manner sets it apart from a simple CoffeeScript syntax tutorial.

The book begins with some environment setup information and then spends some time introducing CoffeeScript syntax and idioms. After that, the book's chapters each serve as a mini-tutorial either detailing a library or framework like Cordova, or outlining a specific task, like testing or building a CoffeeScript application for deployment. For the most part, each of these chapters can be read independently as "Getting Started" for the subject matter. The book also, however, provides a high-level look at the tasks and capabilities of CoffeeScript/JavaScript if read cover to cover, which is a feature not often present in books labeled as "Cookbooks".

The text is well written, and the explanations and examples are easy to follow and well thought out. Each individual chapter can generally be read without the preceding ones to mix and match with current interests.

Experienced CoffeeScript or JavaScript developers may not find the depth or complexity that typically accompanies a cookbook-type book, but some of the tasks covered are more advanced tasks and the text is enough to introduce the subject. Also, while the books examples are in CoffeeScript, the concepts and library introductions are just as applicable to JavaScript.

I think if you're interested in CoffeeScript or popular tools and frameworks that JavaScript and CoffeeScript developers are using, then I think you'll be happy with CoffeeScript Application Development.

About the Author
Pierre Jean Capretz is an educator and writer. He began teaching French in 1949 and joined the faculty of Yale in 1956, ultimately becoming the Director of the Language Laboratory at the school and then Director of the Language Development Studio. He is best known as the creator and host of the PBS television series French in Action. He was made Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa by Middlebury College in 1993.

The DVD Rom doesn't work on current versions of either Mac or PC

I bought this hoping it would help with the flow of my French, but instead was met with the frustration of finding out the DVD Rom doesn't work at all on any reasonably new Mac so I borrowed obtained a brand-new PC. Unfortunately it didn't work with that either. It loaded, but the key sections of the DVD did not work - like the actual film. A complete disappointment. C'est la vie in this case.

For those of us that work in KM, you know how confusing it can be to explain. Carla and Cindy have done it again! I purchased multiple copies of the book to share with stakeholders. Comments range from "interesting" to "this makes sense and is articulated very well" (keeping in mind it can be challenging to engage people in the subject when it isn't their job/role).

The book is beautifully laid out, easy to comprehend, and complies tacit knowledge of many of the best KM experts in one place. Well done

The history of the California wine trade, dating back to the 19th century, is a story of vineyards with dark and bloody pasts, tales of rich men, strangling monopolies, the brutal enslavement of vineyard workers, and murder. Five of the wine trade murders were associated with Isaias Hellman's vineyard in Rancho Cucamonga, beginning with the killing of John Rains, who owned the land at the time. History that reads like a thriller

Gold. Aerospace. Agriculture. Filmmaking and television. Computers and consumer electronics. Wine. Viewed through the lens of business and commerce, these industries dominate the history of the State of California. Examining any one of them as it has evolved over the three centuries since Spanish monks seized control of the land helps illuminate how California has become the wealthy and populous state it is today. In Tangled Vines, journalist Frances Dinkelspiel tells the colorful story of California’s wine industry, enriching our understanding of the state’s history — and she makes it read like a thriller.

Tangled Vines recounts the 18th-century origins of the state’s wine industry in the rising demand for sacramental wine for use in the Catholic missions that were the first centers of European settlement in California. For two centuries, Californios (Spanish-speaking settlers) dominated the field until the Gold Rush brought tens of thousands of English-speakers to the state, newcomers who gained the ascendancy through hard work, shrewd investment, as well as fraud and even murder.

As Dinkelspiel tells the story, California’s wine industry didn’t come into its own until late in the 19th century when it finally gained acceptance on the East Coast of the U.S. as an alternative to fine European wines. The industry flourished, its center of gravity moving from Southern California to San Francisco, until the advent of Prohibition in 1920 — and then collapsed. Revival, and the rise of Napa and Sonoma counties, came late in the 1960s through the pioneering efforts of Robert Mondavi. We all know the rest.

The focal point of Dinkelspiel’s tale is the tragic 2005 fire that destroyed as much as $250 million worth of wine stored at the cavernous Wines Central warehouse in Vallejo. Set by a 300-pound, self-styled wine expert named Mark Anderson in an attempt to cover up his theft over many years of millions of dollars worth of wine entrusted to his care, the fire occasioned years of shameful antics by Anderson to delay action against him in both civil and criminal courts. Only seven years after the fire was the arsonist and thief sent to prison for a 27-year term that would end after he turned 87.

From the recently canonized Father Junipero Serra to Mark Anderson himself, the tale related in Tangled Vines is crammed with fascinating characters. It’s a great read.

Frances Dinkelspiel, a former reporter for the San Jose Mercury-News and co-founder of the popular website Berkeleyside, is also the author of Towers of Gold: How One Jewish Immigrant Named Isaias Hellman Created California. Hellman, the author’s great-great grandfather, also figures prominently in Tangled Vines, which is her second book.

History that reads like a novel!

I lived in the Bay Area at the time of the wine warehouse fire at Mare Island. I accidentally ran across this book on Amazon.
What was more interesting than the arson was the number of scammers in the business. Mark Anderson, the arsonist, lived in Orinda where I also lived but had never heard of him. At the time of the fire he lived in Sausalito and was a 'respected' member of the community. Mark sold much of his wine to Premier Cru in Oakland, who took a big loss. Premier is in the news now, having sold futures mainly to Chinese and Japanese buyers and not making delivery. As with Mark, their reasons for failure are vague and not believable.
Francis' relatives owned vineyards in Los Angeles...and she spends much of the book on the history of the area...also very fascinating. Once, the Cucamonga area had more acreage in grapes than both Sonoma and Napa and was the biggest wine region in the U.S.!

A diversion into unknown topics

This is not a book I would have taken off the shelf in a bookstore since I'm not a wine drinker. Our book discussion group picked it and I figured out how many pages I'd have to read a day to finish in time. To the author's credit, I found myself reading more and more of each day's allotment, learning about why my wine-loving friends could become so obsessed with this obviously enjoyable way to stay hydrated. I am normally a news junkie, but don't recall hearing about the disastrous fire that is the focus of this book. Even if I had, I doubt I would have understood what a huge blow this was to the vintners of Napa Valley and other wine-producing areas. Now my problem is which of my other friends I could pass this book on to. That's a happy dilemma.
