Good textbook and learning tool
By Sara E. Jastrzebski
This book is required reading for my graduate studies. Normally subjects like ethics can be extremely dry and boring. This book is not. There are relevant case studies that really help the reader grasp the various scenarios they may find themselves in. The "technical" content is engaging, not dry at all.

Nice enough work book, but . . .

Book is a mess!
By Prof Tom
I concur with the other reviewers. This book is a mess.

I am a member of an Italian Book Club, all of whose members are American who read and speak the language on an advanced level. We decided recently to take a break from reading novels and do a thorough review of the grammar. I recommended that we use the book under review because the price was so low. And now we are all into it. And we are appalled by all the errors and I am embarrassed by my having recommended it. But since we are so far along in the language we have been able to spot the errors and typos and correct them, though frankly, the task of discerning and correcting has become irritating and laborious.

Now here is the kicker: there is another edition of the same book with the same publishing year also offered through Amazon at almost triple the price. My question is: does this second edition correct all, or at least most, of the errors of the edition being reviewed here? From looking at the Amazon page of the second more expensive edition there is no way of knowing the answer. We do see on the top of the Amazon page offering the second edition in the large-lettered book title a date of 2/12/16, 4 days after the publishing date of the cheaper edition I am reviewing here. No other information is given, even under "." So we are in the dark about the quality of the much more expensive edition. So while I can in good conscience advise the potential buyer not to buy the cheaper version under review here, I cannot in good conscience recommend the more expensive version.

My guess is that there has been a horrible mix-up at the publisher's. McGraw-Hill for some reason published the edition I am reviewing here that was riddled with errors, and they knew this. Now they are trying to dump this bad press run on the Amazon customer. But then they quickly issued another edition, but at a very high price that will push the buyer to the cheaper edition that they need to dump. But is the new, expensive edition expunged of all its errors, typos, and incomprehensibilities? We won't know until several people buy it and review it. So, dear reader, my recommendation now is to stay far away from purchasing either edition until McGraw and Amazon clear up this mess.

By Audra Justice Ottaway
As the other comments mention, the exercises and corresponding answers have mistakes. However, I felt that by finding these mistakes and double checking with my teacher, that I learned not to make those mistakes ever again! The explanation portions are adequate and are easily supplemented by on-line searches - for example the section on pronomial verbs doesn't cover the depth and breadth of that topic, not does it address using those verbs in other tenses. I think it is fine for a next-step; certainly not beginner. Buona Fortuna!

The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill: Defender of the Realm, 1940-1965, by William Manchester, Paul Reid

Spanning the years 1940 to 1965, The Last Lion: Defender of the Realm begins shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister—when Great Britain stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. In brilliant prose and informed by decades of research, William Manchester and Paul Reid recount how Churchill organized his nation’s military response and defense, convinced FDR to support the cause, and personified the “never surrender” ethos that helped win the war. We witness Churchill, driven from office, warning the world of the coming Soviet menace. And after his triumphant return to 10 Downing Street, we follow him as he pursues his final policy goal: a summit with President Dwight Eisenhower and Soviet leaders. And in the end, we experience Churchill’s last years, when he faces the end of his life with the same courage he brought to every battle he ever fought.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The second volume of the late Manchester’s Churchill biography (The Last Lion: Alone, 1988) left its audience in suspense with Churchill’s appointment as British prime minister in May 1940 and in anticipation of how Manchester would present Churchill’s and Britain’s finest hour in WWII. Foiled by illness, Manchester tapped Paul Reid, who has magnificently completed Manchester’s work. Opening with a character sketch of Churchill in his multifaceted guises of sentimentality, egotistical insensitivity, and brilliance, Reid dives into Churchill’s war leadership in 1940 that is the cynosure of his place in history. Reid’s got the research right, down to the day, down to the minute. He shows Churchill defying Hitler and appeasers––the French leadership and figures in the British government––who even in 1940 thought peace could be arranged with the triumphant Nazis. As Reid chronicles Churchill’s public speeches, communications, and strategy sessions, he affords regular glimpses at Churchill’s private aspects—his wittiness, sybaritic consumption of scotch and cigars, and moods bordering on depression. If reading Churchill’s life after 1945 entails an unavoidably anticlimactic quality, Reid nevertheless ably chronicles its main events of writing his WWII memoirs and assuming his second premiership of 1951–55. Manchester was one of the best Churchill biographers, and this capstone to his magnum opus ought not be missed. --Gilbert Taylor

A Worthy Final Volume
By Raoul
I have been nervously awaiting this book for years. My first encounter with Manchester came when volume one first came out. I was a child, and I went to visit my grandmother (who was in London during the Blitz); she held the book up to show me what she was reading. "The man." she said. "The great, great man."

Years later, I read the first two volumes almost in one sitting - couldn't put them down - and have reread large parts of them over the years (every time I looked some piece up I'd find myself sitting down for an hour or two because I couldn't stop). I remember when Finest Hour reported that the trilogy would never be finished: it was like a punch in the stomach.

I had my doubts about the ability of another author to write worthily of Manchester, and I was afraid this volume wouldn't measure up. No need to worry: this is every bit as much a page-turner as the last two volumes. It's not QUITE Manchester - I thought I could feel a bit of a difference in style, somehow - and yet it IS extremely good, much better than I had expected.

Like the first two volumes, we begin with a preamble ("The Lion Hunted") in which we are (re-)acquainted with the book's subject. There is a certain amount of repetition of material from the two earlier preambles, but much good new material as well. I've read thousands of pages on Churchill, but even I found some good new anecdotes and quotations here. After that we're hurled right into the middle of the most dramatic days of World War Two. The unexpected, catastrophic defeats; the incompetence and perfidy of the people in charge of France - it doesn't take much from a writer to make this an exciting story, and yet I don't think it has ever been told better than this. Really, just what I had hoped for from Manchester himself. If the later parts of the book don't quite keep the same level of excitement, neither do the events they recount.

My only complaint is the ending: really, the book just stops. Read the end of volume II: I would have expected Manchester himself to end with a climactic summary, perhaps returning to his major insight from the start: the central significance of Churchill in history is that he was a product of the late nineteenth century who was able to bring the virtues of the era of his formative years to life again at a time when they were needed, and when the British people were not yet too far from them. Actually, I do have one other complaint, and it's with the publisher: the dust jacket doesn't match the first edition dust jackets of the first two volumes. Doesn't look as good on the shelf as I would have liked.

All in all, this is a worthy final volume. Manchester himself would be proud, and there can be no doubt that this trilogy would be Churchill's favourite biography. Highly recommended, to fans of the first two volumes and newcomers alike.

Vol III from a wonderful series on WSC
By L. Figueroa
This is the last volume in a wonderful series of books on Winston Spencer Churchill. I am almost finished with this last book and have learned quite a bit about the man, the country he loved and lead through one of its most challenging times. When you read about all the people Churchill met and worked with or against you can’t help but want to pick up more books to satisfy your curiosity that the book(s) generate. This book was rather big but well worth it. I don’t understand reviewers who found it boring because of the details – you want the details. The details are written in an engaging style that actually have you wanting to know even more details (e.g. Roosevelt’s history or Stalin’s history outside their relationship with Churchill or his representatives).

The book is about more than Churchill who was really a 19th century gentleman in the 20th century trying to keep the British Empire intact. The writing was on the wall when Churchill saw himself lose influence as the two super powers emerged from WWII – the Soviet Union and the USA. I actually felt sorry for him! I also hated him for his myopic view of “brown” people and how they compared to Englishmen but his thoughts and ideas were quite understandable from reading the first two volumes. Was he a great man – he certainly was. Was he flawed – of course – what great man isn’t? The three volumes made learning about Churchill the man who steered, encouraged, and held the mantle for the people and government of England a total delight to read. This third volume was not written by William Manchester and does not have his enjoyable and delightful style of writing but it does hold its own and does a fine job of completing the history of WSC. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone who likes to read, wants the details (e.g. comments from others in their diaries on their feelings about Churchill) augmented by information about the wars and other historical information that took place throughout the life span of the man.

This is an excellent finale to the three book series
By Pete Santos
This is an excellent finale to the three book series. I have read an awful lot about Winston Churchill by now. He was by no means a perfect person and this book does not represent him as such. But when it is all said and done,,,, Charles DeGaulle, (who had a complicated relationship with alot of the leaders of the Allies), had the band play Fr'ere Victoire when Churchill came to Paris.... And said it was "Only Justice" that it was so.
Papa Victory....Father of the Victory pretty much summed it up. He stood up to Hitler when England was all alone and many in England were trying to figure out how they might arrange a truce. The darkest days of the initial German Invasion... he was in France as the Prime Minister.... He undertook grueling airplane trips to meet with Roosevelt in North Africa and Canada.... he went to Moscow via Africa.... he was not a young man at the time... I was impressed by many things about Churchill, his leadership. His willingness to put his own bacon in the fire without hesitation.... he was a great man and I don't think he is appreciated for how great he was.

Spiders are among the most diverse groups of terrestrial invertebrates, yet they are among the least studied and understood. This first comprehensive guide to all 68 spider families in North America beautifully illustrates 469 of the most commonly encountered species. Group keys enable identification by web type and other observable details, and species descriptions include identification tips, typical habitat, geographic distribution, and behavioral notes. A concise illustrated introduction to spider biology and anatomy explains spider relationships. This book is a critical resource for curious naturalists who want to understand this ubiquitous and ecologically critical component of our biosphere.

From the Inside Flap
“Common Spiders of North America is an exceptionally well constructed and illustrated guide that fills a large gap in America's natural history guides. It will stimulate scientific research and public interest in one of the most diverse and abundant of all animal groups.”--Edward O. Wilson, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University

“Bradley provides a very well written introduction to the biology, natural history, collection, and identification of spiders and provides stunningly beautiful illustrations of nearly 500 common species found in North America. This book is designed to be used by all arachnophiles (and brave arachnophobes) from young to old and from backyard naturalist to scientist. No other field guide on this subject provides such detailed information and illustrations about so many species. It is a must-have for anyone interested in nature and the animals with whom we share this planet.”--Paula E. Cushing, co-author of Spiders of North America: An Identification Manual

At Last a Color Guide to North American Spiders
By David B Richman
Up front I have to note that I know Richard Bradley and also many of the people mentioned in his acknowledgements. In fact I am mentioned there as well, although my contribution was certainly minimal. After the production of "Spiders of North America", by Ubick, Paquin, Cushing, and Roth, it was noted that, while that book was very useful for professional arachnologists, it could not be easily used by the general public. It was, in fact, not meant to be a popular manual. Richard Bradley took on this task to produce the current volume with the encouragement of Paula Cushing and others at the American Arachnological Society, as well as some important financial support from the Society and an anonymous donor (we had one also with the production of "Spiders of North America.") The final result is quite remarkable, with very detailed and beautiful color illustrations by artist Steve Buchanan and a text that covers 469 of the several thousand known species, and examples from all 68 known spider families found in the geographical area covered.

This is by far the most complete treatment of the North American spider fauna for the general public and because Richard had the resources of the American Arachnological Society to draw on, it is also the most up to date on the taxonomy of the families, genera and species covered. It does have a family key, but not a generic or species key. The "Spiders of North America" is basically a very detailed generic key and such a key is, by necessity, very technical. Instead, in "Common Spiders of North America" the reader is guided by the excellent illustrations and descriptions to at least a good starting point to check more specialized literature and Internet sites. It was not possible, unfortunately, to insert the illustrations in the text area, and so there is the usual page flipping needed to match text and illustration. The quality of both text and illustrations should make up for the problem to a large degree.

As one who worked on the production of the more technical "Spiders of North America," I can well appreciate the difficulties involved in publishing a guide such as Bradley's "Common Spiders." I can only say that Richard has done a fantastic job on this book, which should allow most common (and many not so common) spiders to be identified at least to the most likely group of species. This book should prove invaluable to lay person and professional alike. I recommend it very highly. If you need just one book on North American spiders, this is it!

Illustrated Spider Book
By Daphne
Received this book about a week ago and was immediately impressed by the excellent color drawings from Steve Buchanan. According to the back cover "This book is designed to be used.............from backyard naturalist to scientist" and strives to "...simplify the identification of spiders based on a few features of their body and behavior."( p. 31). Accordingly, it starts with an introduction to spider behavior, silk production and use, anatomy, prey catching methods and much more. Dichotomous keys are presented to identify spider families by their webs. To do this in the field one has to take the book along which weighs 2lb and 10oz and does not easily fit into a pocket with its 7 x 10 1/4 inches. Some of the other criteria used to identify spider families are the number and arrangement of eyes (p. 31), the number and arrangement of the spinnerets (p. 32). Even the author admits that some of these structures may not always be easily observed with a hand magnifier provided the spider cooperates. 469 species of spiders are depicted in outstanding drawings contained in 82 plates. This sounds like a lot, however considering the vast area covered - all of North America with the exception of Mexico - with climates ranging from subtropical to arctic as well as habitats from desert to high mountains, only a rather limited number of species within each ecological niche is covered. In the color plates each species is labeled by its scientific name and in some cases also by a common name. Regrettably, the genus is in almost all cases abbreviated with the first letter. For instance plate one has S. rufipes - red legged purseweb spider (sic), A. unicolor, S. abboti, and A. riversi - turret spider (sic). The abbreviation of the genus name seems to be common practice among taxonomists but a non-taxonomist, like me, has to look up each scientific name on the page preceding the plate. This is too bad because there is plenty of space in the plates to spell out the genus name. The mentioned preceding page provides the full scientific and common name (if there is one), TBL (total body length, I assume) of female and male, as well as "see page... " with more info on the spider further back in the Spider Accounts section of the book. Each page preceding the color plates is 1/2 to 2/3 empty. This would be more than enough space to indicate in what region of North America this spider can be found which is very useful for identification. Also a hint at similar looking spiders would be helpful. The Index refers a few times to the "color section" of the book. I skimmed through the book without finding this "color section" which is also not mentioned in Contents. Only after a thorough search did I find the 2 pages that comprise "color section" immediately following the color plates. I wanted to look up Lycosidae = Wolf Spiders in the color plates. Found Lycosidae in Contents and was referred to the Spider Accounts section which is by the way not listed in Contents. So I looked in the Index where again, the color plates for Lycosidae were not given. The plates are only listed with specific Wolf Spider species described in the Spider Accounts section. The information is all there one is just constantly referred from one section of the book to another.

Hopefully the outstanding color drawings in this book will spark new interest in spiders and this book is a good starting point for the novice spider enthusiast but is of interest to more seasoned arachnophils. Better organization would make this book more user friendly.

Great content, but don't like the organization
By G. Davis
I have several spider guides. This is by far the most thorough guide in it's coverage of North American species. Because of that, I like this book a lot. However, it does have a few flaws relative to my needs. 1) I bought the Kindle version and always debate whether it is the right choice, especially for a field guide (but I can put it on my iPad for portability). 2) The spider "paintings(?) aren't as sharp as I feel they should be - I always seem to get better detail in printed guides. 3) On the Kindle, the spider illustration plates face identification information from the previous (or next page) so you have to flip back and forth continuously. I'm not sure that the paper book has the same issue. 4) I much prefer guides which have the write-up adjacent to the plates. This book is done the "old fashioned" way of separating illustrations from descriptions and I find that annoying. 5) The publisher of this book appears to produce an electronic edition as an afterthought (not the first time I've noticed that). They really should take more care to produce an electronic book which is appropriate to the format and takes advantage of the format.
