Raymond and Furugh Switzer are both trained in Imago Couples Therapy and often work together in couples counselling. They have given numerous seminars and workshops on courtship, marriage and parenting across Europe. Raymond is a psychologist from Canada; Furugh a sociologist from Iran. They share the same alma mater, have been married for twenty-two years, and currently live in Hungary. Raymond is the author of Conscious Courtship: Finding Someone to Love for the Rest of Your Life, and works with individuals as well as couples. Furugh is the founder and director of the Mes�d (Your Story) Project, a developmental project for Roma and other disadvantaged mothers which has expanded into several European countries beyond Hungary.

"The Net & the Butterfly" far exceeded my expectations - it works wonders for breakthroughs in personal relationships

As a psychotherapist and coach, "The Net & the Butterfly" was put to immediate use with a highly successful in business client who was unfortunately highly unsuccessful in personal relationships. I had not yet finished reading the last pages of "The Net and the Butterfly" when I recommended an exercise from the 'Butterfly Repellant' chapter - it has many simple exercises that create an amazing paradigm shift in self image. One exercise enabled my client to separate from an established identity that had been destroying relationships to establishing brillant new connections. This book has many exercises that far exceeded my expectations.

Breakthoughs aren't just for Einsteins

This brilliant, inspiring, and fascinating book is a must read. I have spent hours, days, weeks, and even, gulp, months focusing all my attention on a creative problem only to feel farther and farther away from the answer and more and more frustrated. The Net and the Butterfly has taught me to stop trying so hard to "figure out" the answer. And instead, go wash the dishes or walk the dogs or take a much needed snooze and allow another, wiser part of my brain to take over the heavy lifting. In so doing, I'm allowing breakthroughs to happen without trying to force them (and without driving myself and my friends crazy). Does it work? Oh, yes it does. And, I'm so grateful. Judah Pollack and Olivia Fox Cabane have reminded me and taught me that breakthroughs are not just for the Einsteins, but also for those of us just trying to offer our own unique gifts to the world. Well done.

Must read for anyone in need of creativity or innovation

This book breaks down in very clear language how the brain solves problems and comes up with new ideas - and unlike most books - it walks you through how to train your brain to do these things. And if that weren't enough - it is really fun to read.

So many books today have one fairly simple idea and a handful of good examples to back it up. The Net and the Butterfly has a great example on almost every page. Books like The Power of Habit and Moonwalking with Einstein are amazing in their own right - but this book takes some of the concepts in those books to a whole new level. Just the idea of the "DN" Default Network and how your brain works when you are not actively working on an idea, problem, or opportunity, puts things in such clear terms it's refreshing. I can think of entire departments in companies that should read this.

In terms of who specifically should read this - it's a pretty long list from the most experienced CEO and CTO to the most junior person in marketing. The book is so well written and there are so many great examples from Chuck Yeager's intuition that he would break the sound barrier to the way Einstein got to his theory of relativity after collaborating with what amounted to a drinking buddy.

Great Helpful Information; some dated content

One of the roughest things any organization, manager, or worker has to deal with is change. In our modern economy, change is rarely a far-off issue. Change is often going on every day and either you keep up with it or your company becomes obsolete. Managing Organizational Change by Palmer, Dunford, and Akin provides a variety of solid techniques to help people deal with and get through those changes.

I've run my own web-based company for over ten years now, and I have definitely seen the pace of change ramp up to almost insane levels. I took this college class in order to try to get a handle on managing those changes. I found this book to be quite valuable in learning the material. I find it fascinating that some other reviewers claim this is "useless theories" - when I could directly correlate many of the things they discussed with things I had seen over the years. I suppose it could be if a person was a young 18 year old student that they might not see how these types of items relate to the real world. They think of change as a discrete issue that starts, goes on for a while, and then ends. In my experience change is never that neat and tidy, and the chapters of the book help break down all of the various issues into chunks that can be addressed.

As the book lays out, yes you can TRY to plan for a change. However, the different theories help to explain that in some cases changes are simply outside of your control and the best you can do is try to hang on and deal with things as they come at you. Yes, you build back-up plans and forecast - but none of us are 100% accurate at fortune telling. There will always be unplanned-for side effects. Learning to cope with those is incredibly important.

Also, as much as one could try to lay out communication plans to encourage others to buy in, the results can never be completely planned for nor can one necessarily get everyone to buy in. Life is messy. Change is often chaotic. That needs to be understood and accepted. The best laid training and "indoctrination" still will not reach everyone, and that is normal.

I love many of the case studies presented here. They help make the message clear that change is all around us, it is constantly ongoing, and even the best trained individuals can struggle to find a path through it. We see their successes and failures and draw from them.

If I have an issue here it's with the aged language in some of the case studies. It's interesting because there are several competing feelings in my mind here. First, I don't like it when college books update every year just to force students to get the latest version. So I do appreciate that this book isn't doing that. And also, I like reading case studies from various timeframes to see how change management has altered over the years. But with that all being said, sometimes the way a case study is presented feels silly. One line reads "MySpace may next disrupt music" as if MySpace is an up-and-coming force, when it is already a distant past item. Another area says: "The challenging question: 'might MySpace become too big and broad and successful to be cool?'" Again, it's funny to see that as a quote. It would be fine to have a MySpace case study as an example, a moment in time, but to actively ask "could MySpace get too big" really dates the content.

Still, the information is quite valuable, and there were many sections in here which actively helped me in my current management tasks. If you're trying to cope with change in your organization - and really, I would be hard pressed to think of any industry which is NOT going through change right now - then my guess is that the book would help your ability to navigate the issues.

I read most of this book for an MBA course on managing org change. I think it offers some valuable insight but should be coupled with other texts/articles for enhanced insight. Easy to read and understand.

Classic Text

This book is truly a classic in the power engineering field. I consider this book good for the following reasons:

a) The book covers the "bread and butter" issues that every power systems engineer would need. An outstanding example of this is the fact that the book covers protective relaying.

b)The book uses straightforward examples.

I consider this book on par with Stevenson's Power Systems Analysis book in that it is not cluttered with mathematical manipulation.

While no one can argue that computers play a bigger role in power systems computation today than they did even 10 years ago, many of the other books on my book shelf collect dust because Gross's book takes the time to go into why we are doing calculations and what they mean. It is relatively unimportant how you make calculations than what they mean and how to use them.

I have heard Dr. Charlie Gross lecture in continuing education courses at Auburn and I can attest to his skill in explaining things to students.

Avoided the Best Mistakes

Nobody's reviewed this yet? What's going on here? I've had this for many years, and I probably learned most of what I know about power systems from it. If you've tried many highly technical books, you'll REALLY understand when I say that it's just a plain, old, decent book -- does what it's supposed to do without any of it botched. He covers both equipment and connections and, e.g., positive/negative/zero sequence analytical stuff. If you're not eating beans and rice 3 times a day due to low income, this is an investment for you! By the way, Gross has long been the Square D Professor at Auburn U.

About the Author
Patrick Carey received his M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher designing and analyzing clinical studies. He co-authored his first textbook on using Excel as a statistical tool. Patrick has authored or co-authored over 20 academic and trade texts for the software industry.

REALLY Great, Helpful Book

I got this book for an online class, and it was so informative and helpful, that I only had to reach out to the teacher MAYBE twice for assistance. I would especially recommend this book for those that haven't been in the HTML world for a while (it's been 10 years for me), and even those learning for the first time. Really great step by step learning, with reviews at the end that push you just that little bit more to really make sure what you learned is concrete in your mind.

I also RENTED this book through Amazon, rather than purchasing it, for the first time. I will definitely do it again. Very reasonable price, and the return process couldn't be easier.

Web Authoring class

I required this book for a web authoring class at a local community junior college. Although I would have preferred a different book that has different methods of teaching CSS and HTML, this is what I was stuck with. I did get an "A" in the class, but I also had to do extensive research online (using Google and YouTube) to learn about the different commands and structure.

Outstanding book for college course HTML & CSS

I am currently using this book for a college course on HTML & CSS as well as taking other web design courses and using a total of 8 books for all of my classes. This book is simply outstanding. I've taken years of college courses before and have been through many coding course books over the years. This book is a deep dive into html5 and css3 while providing good information for supporting older browsers. It seems very comprehensive and the follow-along tutorials are very helpful, enjoyable to do, and tackle realistic web site situations. The layout of the book is excellent and it is a very visual book, which is as helpful as a well laid out website, which helps me out a lot. It is a mass of information being presented and the book does a very good job of explaining some of the hard to get concepts within CSS. This is not a light book, or only high-level covering HTML/CSS and design, or a light beginners guide, or a book for dummies. It is a very thorough guide to learning HTML and CSS. It takes me a couple of days to get through each tutorial and work along. Two solid long days. This book is outstanding and I wish that more highly technical books that teach coding, scripting, and the like, were approached just like this book does which I find highly effective and just a pleasure to learn with. Hats off to the author and publisher!
