THIRTEEN BBC TELEVISION INTERVIEWS

Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872-1970) was an influential British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and political activist. In 1950, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, in recognition of his many books such as A History of Western Philosophy, The Problems of Philosophy, The Philosophy of Logical Atomism, The Analysis of Mind, Our Knowledge of the External World, Human Knowledge: Its Scope and Limits, Mysticism and Logic, etc.

This 1960 book contains thirteen dialogues that were filmed for BBC television in the spring of 1959; he was interviewed by Woodrow Wyatt, a BBC television commentator. They are categorized as “What is Philosophy?’; Religion; War and Pacifism; Communism and Capitalism; The Role of the Individual; Fanaticism and Tolerance; The Possible Future of Mankind, etc.

Asked about people “who feel they must have a faith or a religion,” Russell replies, “I say people who feel that are showing a kind of cowardice, which in any other sphere would be considered contemptible. But when it’s in the religious sphere it’s thought admirable, and I can’t admire cowardice whatever sphere it’s in… To say you can’t face life without this or that. Everybody ought to be able to face whatever life offers them. It’s a part of… of courage.” (Pg. 29)

He comments, “I’ve observed that the belief in the goodness of God is inversely proportional to the evidence. When there’s no evidence for it at all, people believe it, and when things are going well and you might believe it, they don’t. So I think that if people solve their social problems religion will die out. But on the other hand, if they don’t, I don’t think it will.” (Pg. 31) As to life after death, he states, “I know that the body disintegrates, and I think that there’s no reason whatever to suppose that the mind goes on when the body has disintegrated.” (Pg. 32)

He suggests, “I should like to see everywhere two [judicial] forces, one to prove guilt and one to prove guilt and the other to prove innocence… suppose, for instance, that you were unjustly accused of a murder. The taxpayer pays all the expense of proving that you did the murder, and you, out of your own pocket, have to prove… that you didn’t, and that hardly seems fair… We conduct our affairs on the … principle… that it’s more desirable that ninety-nine innocent men should be punished than that one guilty man should escape…” (Pg. 76-77)

He suggests, “I think scientists have the prerogative that they are sometimes able to prove that they’re right; but artists can’t prove that they are right. An artist can only hope that other people will think so; so I think the artist is in a greater difficulty than the scientist. But the scientists in the modern world undoubtedly is in difficulty, because he may make discoveries that are inconvenient to the government and in that case he’ll get into trouble.” (Pg. 134-135)

Asked why people get involved with fanaticism, he replies, “Well, it’s partly that it gives you a cosy feeling of co-operation. A fanatical group all together have a comfortable feeling that they’re all friends with one another. They are all very excited about the same thing. You can see it in any political party, and they feel very cosy with one another and when that is spread about and is combined with a propensity to hate some other group you get fanaticism well developed.” (Pg. 142-143)

The two discuss many topics, arranged in 13 all-too-brief chapters, most of which are still relevant today. I've always been impressed with Russell's ability to cut through the dogma and get straight to the heart of the matter, which he usually does, on almost every topic they discuss. Well worth more than one reading.

The two discuss many topics, arranged in 13 all-too-brief chapters, most of which are still relevant today. I've always been impressed with Russell's ability to cut through the dogma and get straight to the heart of the matter, which he usually does, on almost every topic they discuss. Well worth more than one reading.

Bertrand Russell has written so many books on so many different topics (himself included), so, if you haven't read him yet, it can be tough to choose a starting point. I think this book is an excellent introduction to the man and his thinking. If you want a sample of his writings, I recommend either "The Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell", or, my favorite, "Bertrand Russell's Best".

Maybe not appropriate for a 3yo

I got this book at the library for my 3 year old daughter.
I often seek books on Amazon that are well reviewed and am pleased with the new books we find but I wasn't impressed with this one. I found myself changing certain words and the ending of the story so it would adapt to a 3 year old.
I didn't feel comfortable with reading how parents were 'going to kill you' or 'big fat liar'. I don't want my daughter calling anyone a 'big fat anything'. The story also has an unexpected ending, explaining why it's okay to lie not to hurt people's feelings which I don't feel is appropriate for a 3 year old to learn. If you see life from the standpoint of a 3yo mom would be sad if you broke the lamp so that makes it ok to lie?? I think not.

She did love the bunny and the general outline of the story but in the end, with all the wonderful books out there, we won't be reading this one again.

HYSTERICAL!

This is one of my favorite picture books to be released in the past year, and as a bookseller, I saw them all. Betty's previous adventures are also very cute, but this installment is the best by far. Betty is a charming and endearing young heroine, and her entire family is vividly and humorously portrayed; a real feat with so few words. Betty's lessons learned about the advantages and pitfalls of truth-telling will have kids and adults alike laughing out loud in recognition. This book is truly a delight and destined to be read over and over again...

Teaches a Dual Message

This is a tough day for Betty Bunny, she is about to learn a hard lesson when it comes to lying.

When no one wants to play with Betty, she decides to take matters into her own hands and a lamp is broken. Quickly trying to hide the evidence, she is soon caught, but instead of owning up to her actions, she devises a fantastical story involving the tooth fairy and a bag of baby teeth.

Being called out by her mother, it is explained to her that lying is not okay. Betty is sticking to her story, but in a typical play on the Boy Who Cried Wolf, another item is broken and no one believes that it is not Betty's fault.

This day is just getting tougher and tougher until her brother confesses to the incident and is rewarded for his honesty. Confusion ensues and silly Betty is suddenly confessing to all sorts of things.

Swearing to tell the truth brings about confusions - that is where this book teaches a dual message of honesty and doing your best not to hurt other people's feelings.

About the Author
Atif M. Memon is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Maryland, where he founded and heads the Event Driven Software Lab (EDSL). Researchers at the EDSL study issues of design, development, quality assurance, and maintenance of such software applications. He designed and developed the model-based GUI testing software GUITAR, which operates on Android, iPhone, Java Swing, .NET, Java SWT, UNO, MS Windows, and web systems, and leverages a resource cloud for test automation. He has published over 90 research articles on the topic of event driven systems, software testing, and software engineering. He is the founder of the International Workshop on TESTing Techniques & Experimentation Benchmarks for Event-Driven Software (TESTBEDS). He also helped develop the workshop on Experimental Evaluation of Software and Systems in Computer Science (EVALUATE).

He is the Serial Editor of Advances in Computers, published by Elsevier. This series, since its first volume in 1960 and now the oldest series still being published, covers new developments in computer technology. He is an elected member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Software Testing, Verification and Validation ICST, the largest conference on software testing. He serves on various editorial boards, including that of the Journal of Software Testing, Verification, and Reliability. He has served on numerous National Science Foundation panels and program committees, including ICSE, FSE, ICST, WWW, ASE, ICSM, and WCRE. He is currently serving on a National Academy of Sciences panel as an expert in the area of Computer Science and Information Technology, for the Pakistan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperative Program, sponsored by United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

He has a joint appointment in the University's Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Computer Science in 2001, and started at the University of Maryland soon thereafter. In 2007 he was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a visiting researcher at Tata Research Development and Design Centre.

Just not that exciting

I'm a long time Guhrke fan & I completely agree with the other reviewers who commented on just how blah & boring this story is. I found both Denys & Lola uninspired main characters. I didn't really buy in to their "grand passion," we were told about it, but it never felt real. More than anything I wasn't really convinced Lola really cared about Denys or knew what she wanted. I kept hearing that she loved him, but I never really felt like she did. I felt like a book of their first time together when they were younger would have been a far more interesting read! I usually like the "second chance in love" theme for romances, but this one just didn't quite work, I wasn't invested in the characters, they didn't feel fully fleshed out & I couldn't understand why they fell back in love. Guhrke's "The Marriage Bed" is one of my favorites, and while the story lines aren't that similar, falling-back-in-love was done so much better in it than this one.

Unfortunate ending...

I like second chance stories and Ms. Guhrke has written some great ones. This wasn't great, it was pretty good.....most of the way.

Denys and Lola were likable, their romance reignited and the story moved along. It wasn't a world beater, still I enjoyed it.....until the ending. The ending was an amateur production if ever I saw one. And the proposal! Reminded me of the cutesy proposals shown on the big screen at baseball games. The overall ending plus the proposal left me flat as a flitter.

With a professionally written ending, the novel would have earned 3.5 stars. As it is, nah, can't do it. The ending ruined the story for me.
