Programming Languages: Principles and Paradigms (Undergraduate Topics in Computer Science), by Maurizio Gabbrielli, Simone Martini

With great pleasure, I accepted the invitation extended to me to write these few lines of Foreword. I accepted for at least two reasons. The ?rst is that the request came to me from two colleagues for whom I have always had the greatest regard, starting from the time when I ?rst knew and appreciated them as students and as young researchers. The second reason is that the text by Gabbrielli and Martini is very near to the book that I would have liked to have written but, for various reasons, never have. In particular, theapproachadoptedinthisbookistheonewhichImyselfhavefollowed when organising the various courses on programming languages I have taught for almost thirty years at different levels under various titles. The approach, summarised in 2 words, is that of introducing the general concepts (either using linguistic mechanisms or the implementation structures corresponding to them) in a manner that is independent of any speci?c language; once this is done, “real languages” are introduced. This is the only approach that allows one to - veal similarities between apparently quite different languages (and also between paradigms). At the same time, it makes the task of learning different languages e- ier. In my experience as a lecturer, ex-students recall the principles learned in the course even after many years; they still appreciate the approach which allowed them to adapt to technological developments without too much dif?culty.

Review

From the reviews:

“This undergraduate textbook on the principles of programming languages has many commendable aspects. It is grounded on sound principles of computing, with machines taking a central role. The authors use activation stacks and other machine-level abstractions to explain many complex ideas--such as scopes and evaluation mechanisms--in concrete terms. Furthermore, many aspects of C++, Java, and C# are covered and contrasted in substantial detail. … In short, what the text covers, it covers well … .” (Simon Thompson, ACM Computing Reviews, January, 2011)

“This book provides a detailed description of the main principles behind the design and implementation of modern programming languages. … Primarily, the text is intended as a university textbook, but is also suitable for personal study of professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge of the mechanisms that lie behind the languages they use.” (Stefan Meyer, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1204, 2011)

From the Back Cover

This excellent addition to the UTiCS series of undergraduate textbooks provides a detailed and up to date description of the main principles behind the design and implementation of modern programming languages.

Rather than focusing on a specific language, the book identifies the most important principles shared by large classes of languages. To complete this general approach, detailed descriptions of the main programming paradigms, namely imperative, object-oriented, functional and logic are given, analysed in depth and compared. This provides the basis for a critical understanding of most of the programming languages.

An historical viewpoint is also included, discussing the evolution of programming languages, and to provide a context for most of the constructs in use today. The book concludes with two chapters which introduce basic notions of syntax, semantics and computability, to provide a completely rounded picture of what constitutes a programming language.

Excellent 30,000 Foot View for that Job Interview!
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
It amazes me as a software patent evaluator how many "job interview -- coding practice" books get lost in the details of hash tables and trees, and often miss the point of systems overview completely. The bottom line of this fine text in my opinion-- aim high! Four of the hottest career areas in IT AREN'T in coding (so much of it is being outsourced to India, China and Russia)-- they are in management of: 1. Data Science 2. Embedded Systems 3. Networking 4. Sploits.

There even is a new "CTO" type job-- CDSO, for "Chief Data Science Officer." These management, team leadership and high level positions don't require you to create a list prioritization algorithm on the whiteboard in C# in half an hour, but they DO require you to understand how systems from the machine and network levels relate to solutions in choice of languages, software and --especially-- paradigms.

In talking with programmers and engineers all day who submit new software for patents, I'm astonished at how many got all the way through even grad school (including Stanford and MIT) without taking a paradigm class! They can generally tell you which apps work better with trees vs. arrays, but at a high level, why to choose functional vs. imperative is often really foggy.

This book thoroughly dispels the mist. The only requirement is familiarity with ANY language (and yes, for you old time engineers, it can even be C, and you don't have to be up on OOP). The publishers and marketing hype state that it is "undergrad" level, but... well, no. It starts there and explains with pedagogic excellence (typical of Springer) the basics, but rapidly gets to a level of detail that I'd characterize either as grad or as specialized undergrad (eg software engineering, including machine level interfaces).

In the real world, we don't deal with "perfect" systems-- we've got o/s issues, legacy issues, and software solutions chosen by others that match imperative to big data apps that should be functional, or OOP to multiprocessor apps that should be concurrent process oriented, or embedded in Python that should be in LISP. This text takes you out of those myriad trees to see the forest-- and it's a real eye opener!

Yes, if you're a teacher, this would definitely make a much needed course text. But more importantly for "my" Amazon shoppers and library clients-- I heartily recommend it for self study as well. This isn't one of those "I'm the biggest jock" show off books like demos of unhygenic lisp macros-- the authors aren't trying to show off their magnificence, but truly present a LOT of today's paradigm choices that are easily missed in coding courses, at a very easy to grasp level. Don't take this to mean there is no detail-- we get right down to stacks and registers-- but the 30,000 foot piece relates to real life practical solutions that should be made BEFORE finding out that memory is an issue (for example), including very current things like R vs. Excel and C vs. Python, as well as, yes, functional/lisp and their place in big data, etc. If you want to differentiate yourself from the "coding interview" jocks-- get this! You might surprise yourself and leapfrog them to a management - integrator - engineer - administrator "dream" job!

Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. We always buy the items we review for the sake of objectivity, and although we search for gems, are not shy about trashing an item if it's a waste of time or money for Amazon shoppers. If the reviewer identifies herself, her job or her field, it is only as a point of reference to help you gauge the background and any biases.

It is difficult to improve on a classic, but the fifth edition of Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice does just that, offering the updates readers expect with a deft reorganization that integrates DSM-5(R) with the author's emphasis on psychodynamic thinking. The individual patient is never sacrificed to the diagnostic category, yet clinicians will find the guidance they need to apply DSM-5(R) appropriately. Each chapter has been systematically updated to reflect the myriad and manifold changes in the 9 years since the previous edition's publication. All 19 chapters have new references and cutting-edge material that will prepare psychiatrists and residents to treat patients with compassion and skill. The book offers the following features: - Each chapter integrates new neurobiological findings with psychodynamic understanding so that clinicians can approach their patients with a truly biopsychosocial treatment plan.- Excellent writing and an intuitive structure make complicated psychodynamic concepts easy to understand so that readers can grasp the practical application of theory in everyday practice.- The book links clinical understanding to the new DSM-5(R) nomenclature so that clinicians and trainees can adapt psychodynamic thinking to the new conceptual models of disorders.- New coverage of psychodynamic thinking with relation to the treatment of patients on the autism spectrum addresses an increasingly important practice area.- Posttraumatic stress and dissociative disorders have been combined to allow for integrated coverage of primary psychiatric disorders related to trauma and stressors. A boon to clinicians in training and practice, the book has been meticulously edited and grounded in the latest research. The author firmly believes that clinicians must not lose the complexities of the person in the process of helping the patient. Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, Fifth Edition, keeps this approach front and center as it engages, instructs, and exhorts the reader in the thoughtful, humane practice of psychodynamic psychiatry.

Practical emphasis on empirical validation
By David H. Peterzell PhD PhD
I teach those evil, mean behavioral and cognitive courses that all of you hate. Bwaaahahahahaaaaah. Even so...

Add me to the list of people who heartily endorse this new edition of a classic. I use it as a teaching tool and as a reference, and clinical psychology students generally rave about it. A book like this one is essential at a time when psychodynamic approaches are fighting for their proverbial lives. It keeps pace with the DSM-IV-TR, and with rapid advances in neuroscience and clinical research. As before, it is enormously practical. It continues to provide clinical examples, insight, and wisdom related to each DSM diagnosis. As before, its style is accessible to students and clinicians alike, including those who are not psychodynamically oriented. If I was teaching an introductory course on psychdynamic psychology, this is the text I would use.

Gabbard's book contains the following: (1) A lucid introduction to the foundations of dynamic psychiatry. Topics covered include the patient's subjective experience, the role of the unconscious, psychic determinism, expression of the past in the present, resistance, and the role of neurobiology; (2) An introduction to theory, including ego psychology, object relations theory, self psychology, and attachment theory; (3) A multi-chapter discussion of clinical assessment and treatment, including sections on psychodynamic considerations of medication and hospitalization; (4) Coverage of Axis I disorders (schizophrenia, affective disorders, anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders, sexual dysfunctions, substance-related disorders and eating disorders, and cognitive disorders); (5) Coverage of Axis II disorders, with emphasis on the cluster B This is disorders. There are separate chapters for borderline, narcissistic, antisocial, and hysterical-histrionic disorders. The clinical chapters begin by discussing presentation as it relates to the 4 major dynamic schools, and then discuss assessment, and management. In this new edition, relevant biological research is integrated into the discussion. My kind of book: it takes old-time theories, case studies, and new research, and integrates them in a way that enhances clinical practice.

A Resident's Dream to Understanding the Psychiatric Patient
By Christopher L. Lange
As a third year resident in psychiatry, the utilization of dynamic therapy in the treatment of my patients was daunting. To fully understanding them, would I need to read all of the works of Freud and Jung (and numerous other masters in the field). Dr. Gabbard succintly puts all of the current theories of dynamic therapy into one crisp, easy to read text. The only unfortunate thing about this book is that a third edition is arriving in stores soon.

Gabbard has done his homework!
By Jennifer K. Paweleck-Bellingrodt, Psy.D.
this is a wonderful book. it is well-organized and puts the often elusive concept of psychodynamic theory into real, practical considerations and methods. it includes basic principles, information on defense mechanisms (very useful), and a great deal of information on various psychodynamic theoretical perspectives. the chapters on understanding and treating personality disorders were my favorite, and the author spent a great deal of time on cluster b personality disorders, probably the most often seen and difficult to treat of the personality disorders. i particularly liked the chapter on borderline personality disorder. throughout the book, the theory and concepts are easy to read and understand, and the interventions are practical and well-explained.

Tangled Routes: Women, Work, and Globalization on the Tomato Trail, by Deborah Barndt

Where does our food come from? And what impact does its production have on the earth, on the women workers who move it from field to table, and on all who eat it? Tangled Routes follows a corporate tomato from a Mexican field through the United States to a Canadian table, examining in its wake the dynamic relationship between production and consumption, work and technology, health and environment, bio-diversity and cultural diversity.

After tracing the tomato's journey through space and time (routes and roots), three case studies--a Mexican agribusiness, a Canadian supermarket, and a U.S.-owned fast-food restaurant--offer a view of globalization from above (corporate profiles), globalization from below (stories of women who plant, pick, pack, scan, slice, and sell tomatoes), and "the other globalization" (acts of resistance and alternatives to the corporate model).

Tangled Routes grew out of a unique six-year collaborative project involving feminist academics, activists, and popular educators from Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Written in an accessible style and integrating over 100 photographs, this critical introduction to complex issues ends with signs of hope--creative responses by local and global movements for social justice and environmental sustainability.

Review
The life histories of the women workers are insightful and compelling, and...the photographs are superb. (Book Review Digest)

Who could believe that the story of a tomato's northward journey could reveal the true heart of corporate globalization? Women, that's who. Women whose toil speeds the journey and whose stories leap off the page to touch our hearts and our consciousness. Deborah Barndt's Tangled Routes is a wonderful and important book. (Barlow, Maude)

With Tangled Routes, Deborah Barndt pioneers a method for demystifying the technologies of globalization with an extraordinarily well-crafted and lively ethnography of the transnational tomato chain. Along the way, we encounter not only the women working the fields, factories, and fast-food outlets but also the variety of survival practices and resistances that constitute 'globalization from below.' These compelling stories counterpoint the spatial and social abstractions of the genetically engineered corporate tomato, its neoliberal trade regime, and its flexible workplaces. Barndt's coherent framing of a series of situational accounts models an understanding of the underside of globalization that is instructive, empowering, and richly textured. (Philip McMichael Philip McMichael Philip McMichael)

Describes in vivid detail the intricate path of the commodified tomato from the agricultural fields of the South to the fast-food restaurants and supermarkets of the North. (Canadian Woman Studies)

The author examines concepts old and new in an innovative, creative, and thoroughly engaging manner by mixing a strong writing style with a series of contextualising photographs. . . . An excellent interdisciplinary text that is equally useful inside and outside the classroom. (Just Labour)

What consumers have both an obligation and a right to know about where their food comes from and what it means. (Rosset, Peter)

This book is an original contribution to the vast literature on globalization, providing a timely, relevant analysis as well as a set of creative and concrete strategies to challenge industrial agricultural practices. Activists and students alike will gain much from it. (Gender, Place And Culture)

The strengths of this book are its organization and clarity, its skillful interweaving of global processes and local realities, and its attention to methodology. I definitely plan to use it again in my international studies course. (Sita Ranchod-Nilsson)

This is a detailed, ethnographically rich text for undergraduates. The feminist and ecological perspectives are clear and compelling. The book also fits nicely as a case study for the world capitalist system and food as commodity. This is the final work I assign in my food and culture class because it summarizes and applies so many of the course theories and concepts in a single case that students are able to use to discuss a variety of issues. (Carolyn Smith-Morris)

Tangled Routes caught my attention when I decided that I really needed to add a more global perspective to my course. It offers the unique opportunity to follow a single product across space and time and introduces globalization from above and below. This approach allows both sides to be seen clearly, demonstrating that some of the issues do not have simple answers. The connection of women to globalization, not only through agriculture but through world production in general, is also a real plus. The photographs are wonderful, and the activist pieces at the ends of the chapters offer students some concrete examples for responding to a corporate world. (Richard Peterson)

Tangled Routes
By Lucy Long
Deborah Barndt offers the best analysis I have read of the philosophical foundations that allowed North Americans to lose our connections with food. She explores how our approach to food represents a larger worldview that believes it is possible to reduce everything down to logical and quantifiable formulas. It also sees nature (and natural food and natural processes) as somewhat dangerous both physically and culturally, so that we feel a need to tame nature and make it work in our favor. She also then ties this analysis to the lives of real people, so that we can see how such an approach actually plays out in our society.
Although the text is dense at times, this is worth the time and thought it might take. EXCELLENT!

The aim of this book is to make Robinson's discovery, and some of the subsequent research, available to students with a background in undergraduate mathematics. In its various forms, the manuscript was used by the second author in several graduate courses at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first chapter and parts of the rest of the book can be used in an advanced undergraduate course. Research mathematicians who want a quick introduction to nonstandard analysis will also find it useful. The main addition of this book to the contributions of previous textbooks on nonstandard analysis (12,37,42,46) is the first chapter, which eases the reader into the subject with an elementary model suitable for the calculus, and the fourth chapter on measure theory in nonstandard models.

Artworld Prestige: Arguing Cultural Value, by Timothy Van Laar, Leonard Diepeveen

Why does the artworld often privilege one cultural form over another? Why does it grant more attention to reviews in, say, Artforum over ARTnews? And how can an artist once hailed as visionary be dismissed as derivative just a few years later? Exploring the ever-shifting estimations of value that make up the confluence of artists, critics, patrons, and gallery owners known as the artworld, Timothy van Laar and Leonard Diepeveen argue that prestige, a matter of socially constructed deference and conferral, plays an indispensable role in the attention and reception given to modern and contemporary art.

After an initial chapter that develops a theory of prestige and the poignancy of its loss, the book looks at how arguments of prestige function in systems of representation, various media, and art's relationship to affect. It considers twentieth-century artists who moved not away from, but toward figuration; looks at what is at stake in the recurrent argument about the death of painting; examines the decline and an apparent return of sensual pleasure as a central attribute of visual art; and concludes with a look at the peculiar function of prestige in outsider art.

Illustrated with artwork by David Park, Jorge Pardo, Gerhard Richter, Anish Kapoor, Cecily Brown, Howard Finster, and others, Artworld Prestige provides an engaging guide to the changes, debates, and shifts that animate aesthetic judgments.

Review

"In clear, lively prose, the authors have crafted an original and compelling field guide to the higher realms of contemporary art criticism and the way it confers or denies the halos of prestige. The vantage point they take enables them to illuminate some startling values, dogmas, and blind spots that lie hidden within familiar art world discourse."--Carol Duncan, author of Civilizing Rituals: Inside Public Art Museums

"In a series of nicely described case studies, the authors show how understanding prestige involves analyzing the most obdurate terms of modernism and postmodernism: self-awareness, relevance, theory, difficulty, irony, pleasure, seriousness, professionalism, the instability of meaning, and the refusal of sense. This will be a very helpful book for anyone struggling to understand how the artworld produces its unpredictable judgments."--James Elkins, author of What Painting Is

A major step forward in the institutional theory of art but stops short of the finish line
By John Armstrong
In this short but meaty book the authors make what I think is a real breakthrough in our understanding of value in art. They embrace the so-called institutional theory of art put forth most notably by philosophers George Dickie and Arthur Danto and take it from the world of axioms and thought experiments into the real world, which is to say the real NY-centered art world of the last fifty years. (They have little if any interest in the broader world in which the art world exists.)

They zero in on a central principle of the institutional theory of art, which is that the status of a work of art is not intrinsic to the work but is conferred by the artworld to which the work is presented. They look at how this conferral works - who does it, when, and how. They stress that the process is collaborative (more exactly negotiative, if there is such a word), and that it involves advocacy for and against the work that ends in some form of consensus. They allow that the consensus may not be complete, that it may involve ambivalence, and, most importantly, that it may be reversed at some later date, so that a work may lose the status it was originally granted, or gain status that was originally withheld from it.

They could have called the status conferred on a work (and occasionally withdrawn from it) simply value, but then they would have had to explain which of the various meanings of the word they did and did not intend in their usage of it. Instead, they choose a different word, prestige. Prestige is a primitive: we have an instinctive sense for it. It can be rationalized but doesn't have to be. The one intrinsic property it has is that it is desirable. And it's social - it's not merely something we want to have, it's something we want others to know we have. (A nice thing about prestige is that it's transitive. You can have prestige by having it conferred directly on you, you can have it by owning a work of art by an artist that has prestige, you can have it by knowing people who have prestige, and so on.) The term prestige as used by the authors names the exact thing in the artworld that everybody is aware of but nobody has found a really satisfactory way of talking about.

To my mind the model of negotiated and periodically renegotiated value, grounded in desire and social dynamics, is the real breakthrough of the book. The first chapter, in which the authors lay out the model, is compelling, even exciting. But their real interest is not in the core model but rather in the kind of intellectual discourse that it engenders. (This is actually called out in the full title of the book: Artworld Prestige: Arguing Cultural Value.) Their real interest is in the rhetoric - the words, the tropes, the argumentational tactics - employed by those who want to confer or withhold value/prestige in a given situation. The orientation of the book is thus primarily linguistic rather than sociological. (Or economic; they rarely talk about money or the "market".)

In the first chapter, as well as the following four (the last, though called a conclusion, introduces new material and is really a chapter in its own right), they consider a number of specific events which have caused people to argue about art.

The main large scale developments they look at include the end of Abstract Expressionism, the return (or returns) to figurative painting, the rise of stylistic pluralism, assaults on painting by Conceptualists and their kin (united under the cry of "painting is dead"), the rise of feminism and what some would call political correctness in art, attempts to bring pleasure (including beauty and "the aesthetic") back into art, and coming to terms with outsider art.

Examples of the specific events they examine are Greenberg's failed attempt to anoint Jules Olitski as "the best painter alive", Frank Gallo's fall from grace due to the belatedly perceived sexist nature of his work, the consternation caused by Phillip Guston's dramatic switch from abstract to figurative painting, Gerhard Richter's sustained parallel efforts in abstract and figurative styles, the difficulty of establishing a permanent place for American and German Neo-Expressionists, the eternally precarious status of David Hockney, and more (though not much for the considerations of pleasure and outsider art).

The authors present the specific incidents not merely as things that happened but as things that people pronounced on as they happened, whether expressing approval or disapproval. They quote contemporary writings (mostly formal writings but also some interviews) on both sides, and note the ways the participants argue their positions.

I am honestly not sure how much new there is in their analyses. A lot of it is standard rhetoric. Some points that I gleaned are:

* The standard term of praise for art is "serious". It indicates the artist knows what they are doing, that they have a purpose, that the work they are making serves that purpose. Importantly, seriousness is not tied to any particular theory or grand narrative of art.

* The artworld has an elite that you want to connect yourself to. The key characteristic of that elite is professionalism, meaning educated, possessed of specific knowledge (especially of art theory and art history), intelligent, and able to assess seriousness.

* If you are arguing a majority (status quo) position, be calm and hold to the high road. If you are arguing a minority (non-status quo) position, go for a dramatic strike that reduces your opponents' position to nothing (as "painting is dead!")

* Avoid presenting the art you are promoting as being purely what it is. Represent it as being "about" something, or "quoting" something, or, at the very least, as being ironic.

I'm caricaturing to some degree, but these really are the kinds of things they talk about.

This is a good book, definitely worth reading. I think it could have been a great book, if only the authors had paid more attention to the full range of social behaviors that go into the negotiation of prestige and not focused so narrowly on purely verbal ones (which are seen as constituting "the discourse" but I suspect are often no more than after the fact rationalizations of things worked out in much more down to earth ways).

I give it five stars for the first chapter and 3 1/2 stars for the rest, and 4 stars for the book as a whole.

Most enlightening analysis of the perplexing categories delineating the Western Art World
By dominique de Gery
This frank, direct analysis of the current attitudes in the western, American dominated art world is not for the faint of heart. It's aim is anatomical rather than judgmental, which can, at times, feel brutal. The authors have done a thorough job of identifying and describing the discourse and undercurrents of the art world's pluralistic structure, by describing three separate but unequal parts: Professionalism, Amateurism, and finally, almost as a postscript, Outsider art.
"Artworld Prestige" addresses the issue of why the current erudite, art world elite have decreed not only painting but perhaps all Art as "dead". It covers the theoretical progression from the enlightenment, Duchamp to Sol Lewitt, Damien Hirst and Murakami-Takashi, comparing them to artist like David Hockney, who although popular and certainly respected in the Art World, still has a whiff of amateurism about his work.
Timothy Van Laar and Leonard Diepeveen refer to an exhaustive number of important scholars, critics and art theorist, to analyse the Artworld's movement away from beauty, pleasure and an appreciation for the technical or material aspects towards a reverence for self-referential theorizing. In its relatively few pages, this book has managed to include an impressive number of need-to-know contemporary players.
Ultimately, however, I was left with the rather depressing conclusion that the art world mimicked the contemporary social/economic American system too closely for comfort. While it is a demonstrable truth that prestige is conferred democratically by the many upon the few and rare, the mechanisms here describe an elitist stratification. Although the artistic dialogue has progressed, art is still very much tied to the material world by the nature of its patronage.
This book has a great deal to offer students, collectors, art enthusiast and scholars, whether through its thoughtful and comprehensive definitions, or its list of sources and examples.
