The Best Intro to the Musical History of the Middle Ages...

...written in an "available" style and vocabulary, with lots of examples in original notation and modern transcription, plus maps and drawings and all kinds of bonuses to keep the reader on track. Just enough social and political history is included to give the music a vivid context.

There is a companion volume, "Music of the Middle Ages: An Anthology for Performance and Study", and a pack of two 90-minute casettes performed by The Hilliard Ensemble and Western Wind, which may still be available for purchase (ISBN 0-02-872953-6).

Reader beware: you'd better listen to some good recordings of medieval music before investing your reading time in such a project. Scout through my past reviews and you'll find quite a few gems.

On of the best books on modern British theatre!

An excellent in-depth account and critical analysis of modern British theatre, a derobing of the myths surrounding it's 'revolution' in the 1950's with John Osbourne's play 'Look Back in Anger', and an injection of 'poison' in terms of sexual politics. For me it has also served as a great referential source for British theatre companies, stages and playwrights. I highly recommend this book to anyone who seriously wants to know about modern British theatre.

Extremely Disappointed

I studied for more than three months using this book and my friends and I aced the practice tests from the book. When the four of us took the CHSPE Test on March 20th, we were devastated when we reached the math section and realized we were not nearly prepared to pass this test. The disappointment in the face of my friends after the test was heartbreaking. We read the entire book as a group and studied individually but left the test feeling we were set up for failure. I was given test "D" and it consisted of 80% geometry and 20% advanced algebra. The worse part is I don't think I can convince my friends to spend the $92.00 to retake the math section again in June. The writing and reading sections were adequate, but save yourself the disappointment and look for something else to help you with the math.

Above and beyond!

This book is really helpful in preparing people to take the CHSPE. I purchased it in advance last summer and just took the test this past Saturday (June 20, 2009).

As the product description says, it has a couple of sample tests and prompts that you can actually use to practice!

I was just a little ticked off, as the math they prepare you for in this book differs slightly from the actual math section on the test. The ones in this book are either all too basic, too difficult, or too redundant. The math section on the actual test is much more varied. I wouldn't say it's challenging, but I felt a difference.

Yes, the CHSPE administration has changed the calculator policy: all test takers can now bring a calculator (just the simple ones, not the kind that crunches root and/or with raised screens and all that jazz). The official website has more information on that. I don't know why they said that we can't use them in this book, because it was written and published in 2007. I think they changed the policy that same year.

I just took this test 6/21/08 and I have yet to receive my results.
I was a bit worried because older versions of barrons chspe books had bad reviews but I decided to purchase this guide anyway. Besides the book not noting that there is calculators allowed for the test now, I think it is very helpful and built my confidence before taking the actual exam. It had a bunch of practice questions, a self assesment exam [to see what area I needed work on] and 2 model tests (which in my opinion, after taking this test, are very much like the actual exam.) It has tips on how to write an essay in 30 min. and provides details on what they are lookin for in your essay. When I purchased this book I only had a month left until I had to take the exam, so it was perfect because you can cover this book in that amount of time. I'm pretty confident that I will receive my results and will have passed. :] So, yes I would probably recommend this book to people looking for a detailed guide on what to expect on the chspe.

Kindle Edition -- Renascence and Other Poems

I have loved poetry since I was a child. One of my dreams as an adult in a technical world is to have the ability to have poetry with me all the time -- Kindle has the ability to fulfill this wish.

As a start, I began browsing Amazon's list of available poetry. I was leery, because I was certain some of these probably had been converted without consideration for indexing or making sure the poems looked as the authors intended. So,I requested samples of many books, and found that I was correct. For all of the "classics" that I sampled, the formatting was abysmal and there was no index. I sampled one "self published" volume which was beautifully formatted -- but the content was abysmal. It did prove it could be done, though.

When I came upon this edition in the list, I found this statement: "This kindle digital edition of Renascence and Other Poems has been professionally designed and maintains the quality of the original classic publication." "Hooray!" I thought, and purchased it immediately, without bothering with a sample. As you have probably surmised, I was so disappointed.

There is no index or table of contents. Long poems (Renascence in particular) are formatted more like paragraphs for a novel than lines of poetry. There is no break between the poems -- titles are not in bold or italics or in any other way set apart from the content of the poem itself. If you were a reader who is not familiar with the works, you might not be able to tell where one poem ended and another began.

I still am looking forward to being able to easily carry around electronic editions of my favorites, because I am certain someday someone will publish e-versions of poetry volumes that are equal to the print versions. Maybe there are some already out there that I have yet to find.

I did give this two stars rather than just one, because the content still is the searing work that spoke to my heart when I first discovered it on my Mother's bookshelf when I was a teenager.

Oh -- as a side note -- there is no category of "poetry" in the list of Kindle book. I search for poetry to find it.

I was captured with the first lines. Never have I read more captivating words about life and losing someone of importance. I have looked for these words, the ones that expressed what I was feeling for many years and found them waiting in Edna's book. . .just incredible.

This book contains one of my favorite poems, "Ashes of Life." My copy of the book is hardcover from 1917, but the poem is the same no matter what printing you read.
