I like this book immensely.

The book I got was the original hardbound edition because I could actually get it more cheaply than the recent Dover reprint. But I am happy to see that Dover did reprint this book, because it is probably the best book on its subject matter that I have seen. The only negative comment I might have is that it is a relatively slim book but covers a lot of ground, so it might be too compressed for some students.

Some books introduce vectors as directed line segments, others as ordered n-tuples (where n is the dimensionality of a space). This book very quickly gets to both concepts, and even points out that a vector is really an equivalence class of directed line segments, something I had stated to someone whom I was helping to understand vector algebra, but something I do not recall seeing in any book.

The relationship of projective, affine, and metric Euclidean geometry is covered very well, better than I have seen it elsewhere, and homogeneous coordinates are introduced in a way that I think is better motivated than what I have seen in most books dealing with projective geometry. The relationship between Euclidean, elliptic, and hyperbolic geometry is also covered. Vector methods are used to cover many topics (such as spherical trigonometry and linear programming) that would usually not be introduced in a book entitled "Vector Geometry." The relationship between matrices and vectors is covered as well as in any linear algebra book, and all in all, this book goes far beyond other books that purport to cover the same subject.

I cannot rate this book too highly. As I said, I am glad to see that Dover has reprinted it.

1st yr student in maths at U of T. Very condensed, many errors, but highly challenging, difficult but eminently satisfying. Although G de B was not my lecturer, he was still around. I learned much from his book.

Concise survey of modernism

Peter Child's 2000 book Modernism, in The New Critical Idiom series, is exactly what it sets out to be: a brief but diligent overview of modernism, the literary/cultural movement that arose in response to changing times at the turn of the century, signaled by increasing industrialism, urban life, technology, and eventually by the first World War.

As the world grew ever more complex, the capacity for individuals to understand the world diminished. It can be seen then why a prevailing philosophy of realism, in which it's assumed that all members of a rural society possess a basic, common-sense grasp of the world, should have been compelled to give way to a more internalized and subjective response, inherent to each individual, to the complicated urban world. Childs' vision of modernism is less as an artistic movement than an uneasily reacting society in crisis. Not that the new, complicated world was necessarily seen as dystopian, but that it was perplexing, demanding an unprecedented degree of sophistication.

The literary technique known as stream of consciousness is probably the most familiar characteristic trait of modernism. Stream of consciousness writing perhaps became inevitable as people moved out of the wide open country and retreated inside their own heads. Of no less importance was the need many modernist writers found to try to impose order on the new chaos through the imposition of systems or architectures of symbols to provide structure for their works: structure which now seemed lost in the world around them. The reassuring internal logic of these symbol-systems served in a role analogous to that formerly paid by stock-characters plowing through plot-heavy dramas in the preceding era of Victorian realism.

If you're reading this book, then don't thank your professor. There are better textbooks out there, but at lease it short. It's ok if you're taking a summer school Modern literature class. I wouldn't use it in any of my classes otherwise - but I was forced to as a student.

This Book Is Needed & Long Overdue

I have had the privilege of not only being a working actor, but knowing Marci for many years. However I am not being biased when I say that I am SO glad she wrote this book and she's done a magnificent job. It has been needed for a long time. I've personally tried to advise, instruct and help many actors trying to make their way in acting, especially for the camera. And there are many times when I myself need help. Marci has taken her years of experience and her profound desire to help actors and put a voice to it in this book.

I have already started to recommend this book. Marci not only tells the TRUTH, she tells it in such a way that you can really understand why "things are the way they are", what we do as actors that trips us up in the audition room, and most importantly - how to see the business as a whole, so you don't feel like a victim to it, but a part of it. Marci lifts the "fog of not knowing" so that we as actors can see that we are powerful, needed and an essential part of the process. Basically, she will show you that our job in the room is to be present, real and to GET OUT OF OUR OWN WAY.

Good summary of Cryptography and Network Security.

This book explains the issues of Network and Internet security and covers cryptographic principles in general too. Though there is loss of depth in quest of width, it served me well to get a good grounding in the subject. I hope the author focuses on some practical, implemenation issues in the next edition. The topic of firewalls needs better attention and so does IPSec.
