Binary number systems and assembly language programming are covered using regular integer arithmetic, saturating integer arithmetic, and floating-point arithmetic. The text includes extensive treatment of bit manipulation, shifting, extracting and inserting data that is stored in a packed format, as well as chapters on inline coding and programming peripheral devices.

About the Author
Dr. Dan Lewis has served on the faculty of Santa Clara University since 1975. His efforts led to the creation of SCU’s Computer Engineering department in 1988 and he served as the chair of the department for the first 18 years. His recent teaching has focused on introductory programming in C and assembly, with applications to embedded systems. Since 2004, Lewis has worked on K-12 outreach in engineering and computing, supporting his work by raising more than $2.5M in funding provided by National Science Foundation (NSF) grants and private sources. Lewis is the author of three textbooks.
